On initiative order, modified as necessary.
Prior to any other close combat attacks regardless of initiative.
Always at Valeria's base initiative of 4.
Something else?

Search did not avail me, apologies if this has been discussed to death already. (I also didn't see it in any FAQs)

Inquisitor Valeria assaults into combat and chooses to use her Hyperstone Maze. When do the rules for the Hyperstone Maze come into effect?

Hyperstone Maze:... Valeria can use her hyperstone maze once per game,
in lieu of making close combat attacks that round. Choose a character or
monstrous creature in base contact with Valeria. The victim must immediately
roll equal to or under its remaining wounds on a D6 or be trapped within the
hyperstone maze forever - it is removed as a casualty, with no saves of any
kind allowed."

My first impression was that it activates immediately since a) it isn't a close combat attack, and b) it's not specified that it acts on any particular initiative order. However, it was brought up in a game recently that it makes more sense for it to activate on her initiative (namely I4) since it is made "in lieu" of her normal close combat attacks. If so, what if she assaults a unit that would lower her initiative for the purpose of close combat, or is charged by one, etc?

The big issue being that this would potentially allow her to insta-gib much higher initiative characters that would normally eat her alive before she has a chance to swing. What say you, Dakka?

It says 'in lieu of making close combat attacks that round' so it is used whenever she would normally make her CC attacks.

It seems pretty clear.

Emphatically agreed; since there is no other timing given, and the attempt is in lieu of her attacks it happens whenever she would attack.

Imma dig around for a bit for another similar type item/power that actually does it's business at a different time than the model's I-step.

Well the easiest would be most of the psychic power in th GK codex, along with a few of the Wargear; Hammerhand, Might of Titan, etc all happen very specifically before attacks are made(but after moves).

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

Looks pretty unanimous so far. Unless there's a clear argument to the contrary, I'll continue to play it on initiative order.

I can't really think of anything else that works in the same way to compare it to... although now that I think about it, if they had intended it to be resolved before any attacks are made, they would have most likely worded it similarly to Cleansing Flame.

Thanks much!
