Hi guys! I am from Malaysia, my ex colleagues play a lot of table top game, one of them has quite a bit of 40k collection, and I am quite impressed by the model and painting.

I don't really play, mainly because I'm not such a strategist in war combat. But I was wondering if any of you guys mod your own miniature into your own character? What's the term you call them in general? Modded miniature? Can they be played into the game?

If you do have your own "modded" miniature? Care to show me?

The term is called converting or conversions. Its normally done with "green stuff" or spare model parts. mixing and matching pieces combined with patience with green stuff can make for some pretty awesome models. Some are just for looks and others are conversions used to create a character that GW hasnt made a model for.

Heyya !

Wargames are not only for brilliant strategist

Many of us also play to take part in (and create) an epic story, a lot like in a rpg ; or to paint, convert...

There is much to do, after joining the hobby !

And Dakka is a great way to discover it.

Welcome to Dakka! You will find a lot of conversion work in these pages, some of which is painted and created by people who don't play the games. You would not be alone!

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.

There are many people on hear, and elsewhere, who don't play at all and just paint and build, along with many more, like myself, who play mostly as a way to show off there models and have an aim but mostly want to paint and build. I'm very bad at playing and normaly loose (but can put up a good fight), but still enjoy it as i spend time with friends and get to play with my nice minis rather than spending hours on them then putting them on a shelf.

Welcome!

Paul is correct. There are many people that don't play the games at all but love to build, convert,, collect, and paint the miniatures. Many wargaming conventions offer awards for the best painted miniatures in several different categories. Games Workshop's award is called the Golden Demon and is offered in many different countries during their GW Games Day.

You can see a lot of great coversions in the Painting and Modelling (P&M) threads here on Dakka as well as in the Dakka Gallery.

Some other great sites include Cool Mini or Not and this site showing the previous Golden Demon winners around the world.

Enjoy!

HA ha ha, I am not one of those robots, I actually read your posts before replying.

I make my own Daemon Princes/Princesses. So many ways you can do them... I also add effects but they are all in America, and I am in Afghanistan. Also maid my own Techmarines and Telion...

BUT if you make a full sculpture, and keep it on the right size base, you can "PLAY IT AS" like a hero you made but want it to use a different hero's abilities...

You can also mold your own Spawns, Possessed, Chosen, Looted Tank, Possessed Vehicles, Greater Daemons, an Avatar, Servitors, Obliteraters.... This list will go on for ever. Plus all the scratch builds like Titans, or Squiggiths, Tanks.

Keep it in a 28mm scale with the right paint job and base size and you can make it work for you.
