I'm not even sure if I want to be Lizardmen yet... But there is a chance I'll get the Stegadon before I even see codex.... so which do I build it as?

The Restrictions I Put On My Tallarn Lists:
- Missile Launchers are the only HW teams allowed in Infantry Squads.
- All units able to take the FW Desert Raider special rule, must take it in lists of 750 points or more.
- 1 unit of 10 Rough Riders is required for lists of 1000 points or more.
- 2 units of Mukaali Rough Riders are required for lists of 1000 points or more.
- No vehicles besides Chimera Armoured Transports and Hydra Flak Tank Batteries are allowed.
- Al'Rahem is required in lists of 1000 points or more. |

well it depends, as a general rule pretty much always go with an ancient stegadon. however the question is do you build it with the engine of the gods or with a skink chief with a lance or just a regular one. It depends on what role you want the stegadon to fill, if you want a magic oriented buff machine that you wont be running into combat then go engine, if you want to just charge him into anything and everything the stegadon chief with lance is awesome. If i were you i would magnetize the options, i did it with my steg and it wasn't too hard.

For the points the Ancient is far better, but that doesn't mean that the normal Steg is in any way bad. I would actually avoid putting characters on them, they are simply too vulnerable. In 8th you generally want to avoid taking single monsters because they are so easy to kill, and because there of the % limits you tend to only be able to take a single Ancient and still afford Salamanders, so there is definitely a place for the standard Stegs. At 2400 you can easily afford 1 Ancient and 2 baby Stegs, which even in 8th is a pain to deal with.
In any case I wouldn't worry about it too much, until you get to tournament games most people won't care if you assemble it as an Ancient and use it as a normal Steg or even an Engine. There is only a couple of differences in the weapon loadout in terms of the assembly anyway, if you can you could just magnetize them.

Both can work nicely, with regular stegs i've had some lucky bow shots slaying 2+ chaos warriors, on the other hand that +1S and armour is a big deal in CC making the ancient quite great. Things to avoid, fighting anything that has mass S5+ attacks, swordmasters halberd warriors anything with lances. Jump on chances to charge such threats if they're low in number or better yet in a flank (imacts FTW), prefferably already locked with a solid saurus block.
Final advice, stegs kill things but won't win combats alone (unless charging a 10 man infantry unit), allways sinchronise attacks with your main blocks.

Hell no, why the hell would you not stomp people with your monster. All you need is extra protection for the priest, i personally like the dawnstone making his 2+ re-rollable, as long as you don't get in combat with something that has high S he can last forever, also burning alignment is most effective in the thick of it
