Subject: Salamanders - What where why?

I'm reading Legends of the Space Marines and the first story is about the Salamanders chapter, they seem to have 'Onyx' black skin and red eyes and at one point one of the Marines describes the Imperial Guard soldiers as 'humans' as if they are not humans themselves. I know they are super humans as they are genetically altered etc etc, but are they humans?
And if they are then why are they not seen as Xenos or mutants, what with their red eyes and black (onyx) skin?

They're superhumans, like humans, but apart from them, like Ogryns and Ratlings. And they aren't xenos or mutants as they are the work of the Emperor.

"Also, as a result of a reaction between their genetics and the high levels of radiation on Nocturne, Salamanders battle brothers have dark or jet black skin and bright, burning eyes." Lexicanum They are 100% Space Marines.

They are humans. The skin, eyes etc, are all caused by they're homeplanet's environment.

This. The radiation on Nocturne also allows them to see in the ultraviolet spectrum if I recall correctly.
They are also very nice to regular people.

Space marines think themselves higher than normal humans which they are. It differs on how they view humans, so chapters like the marines malevolent think humans are weak and not worth protecting. While the salamanders and the utralmarines tend to think humans need protection and guidance because they're only human.

Actually depending on Chapter (and BL author of course) SMs referred either as superhumans (lately it's more of the trend) or post-humans.
