In 2012 I'm planning to decal and dip my block-painted BA army that for the most part was built and painted quite a few years ago (mostly in 2nd and 3rd edition, a bit in 4th). Along with this, I'll probably touch up the paintjobs a bit and as long as this much effort is being expended, I'm toying with rearming some of the figs to current standards. I've got two standard assault squads and a vet assault squad. All are (and will remain) jump packed.

Three questions.

1) What are your ideal loadouts within the limits of the codex (assume I had unlimited $ for buying bits)

2) What are your idea loadouts within the confines of the Assault marine box set contents?

3) What would your ideal loadouts be with the box set and just a few added bits?

I realize this is asking for a no small amount of effort. Much appreciated in advance.

This is for a force that is mostly based around infantry with few tanks.

It's blood angels. Do you really need advice on how to run them as better than all other marines?

I tend to love my BA assault squads to all be 10 man strong, 8 with bolt pistol and chainsword, 1 with a meltagun and Serg with bolt pistol and power fist.
i have a few with infernus pistols from i think sang guard box or DC box, i forget which and i have a few with hand flamers, but generally i preffer the squad basic with just the melta and power fist. the only time i really change it is if i am expecting lots of mech and then i will run squads with 2x meltaguns.

Unless the local BA players are running a 'decent of angels' list, the only kind of assault squads I see in other BA armies are;
- sergeant kitted to taste
- 1x meltagun
- 3x marines
- remove jump packs for 'free' assault cannon or las/twin-linked plasma gun upgrade on razorback.

BA's make space puppy MSU look tame - only GK's is deadlier because their vehicles ignore shaken/stunned by passing a Ld10 psychic test.

A good BA army built around Assault Marines with Jump Packs can work. The core unit is 10 men with 2 Meltaguns and a Power Fist Sergeant. You can mix in squads with 2 Flamers and a PW (or single LC) Sergeant.

I would strongly recommend taking the effort to acquire the needed Meltaguns and Flamers to do this. While the standard Assault Marine box does not include these options, they are cheaper and more effective than their Pistol counterparts, for which the only benefit is an extra CC attack. I would only take Hand Flamers or Infernus Pistols on Sergeants, and only if the squad is already maxed out on special weapons.

By the way, this sort of army works best with no vehicles whatsoever. If you want fire support, use Devastators instead.

The vet. assault squad I assume will be vanguard. They'll want a whole bunch of awesomeness with their cc weapons.

double melta, powerfist is the canonical choice, it requires buying the box of melta guns.
One squad of double flamers and pw to take care of infantry is usually also needed. I am with MrE on this one .

Within confines of the boxes I still would go away from the inferno pistol, as the range is that bad.

If they are jump packless than I would match their set up to their razorback. Also I wouldn't go for a powerfist in this case.

Thanks for the advice folks. I feel like I'm learning alot. Keep it coming!

One question. Is there any use for plasma pistols and plasma guns? I've got a fair number of them mixed into my squads.

Well, if there are some MCs around, then I'd consider a Honor Guard with 4 plasma guns.
