So, my dead eye mortar crew decides to introduce the baddies to some high angle heck (most recently a passel of those pesky, pointy eared Seaguard guys) and drops the 5" template dead center of the block (say 25 in 5x5) hitting every model. This includes the 2 characters and FC in the front rank. This, as I understand it, would trigger 3 LoS rolls (2 characters + unit champ).

My question is, assuming all of the LoS rolls are successful, how many "to wounds" am I rolling? Is it 22 because of the successful LoS rolls or do you go ahead and roll 25 against the rest of the unit?

I can't find anything that makes me think the 3 LoS takers can still be hit because LoS only requires 5 RnF, not 5 unhit RnF. So, do 3 of the RnF effectively take double hits or are those 3 hits lost?

Played it as 22, but been wondering if I should have got to roll the other 3 as well. 'Cause, ya know, 3 more dice could make all the difference

There is nothing in the rules that say models can't take more hits than the number of models in existence. In the case of LoS!, you shift the hit to a RnF unit member. In your case there would still be 25 hits.

There are no exceptions for fewer models than hits. All you do is shift the hit(s) to the unit.

I suggest you don't believe anything posted by thedarkavenger unless confirmed by other regular posters here at Dakka. He has shown he is incapable of basic English comprehension.

That is what I was leaning toward, Davall. Didn't want to hold up the game trying to verify, but now re-reading pg. 99 under "Unusual Shooting Attacks" I'm in full agreement with you. The language there does not exempt the RnF from multiple hits and I can't find anywhere else that suggests it either.

Which is good, 'cause the way I roll, I need all the dice I can get

Thanks for the response

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

You always do the same number of hits.

The LoS roll determines if its the unit or the character that gets hit.

Yes this can result in the unit taking more hits then it has RnF members.
