If I was interested in starting a Skorne army, what would be some of the nicer choices for a strong, fun and awesome looking army?

In my cave, lying down and waiting for you...

Im not a skorne player, but my friend some times fields an Morghul assasination army. It uses the following units:

Lord Assassin Morghul
Basilisk Krea
Basilisk Drake
As many blood runners as you can get
Lots of Master Tormentors

The army is not the strongest, but is really fun to play and looks awesome on the tabletop.

There isnt truly any strong choices, since they depend on what list you're planning to do. Every unit is good at something, you just have to use them properly.

I would honestly avoid the battlebox. I'm biased a bit though, as I don't like Morghul or the Savages included.

But strong and fun choices for an awesome looking army? This is relative to individual tastes, but:

-Xerxis with full Cetrati and Arcuarii with Hakaar, Praetorian Swordsmen, and a couple of Titans for flavoring.
-Makeda (p or e) with Molik Karn, some Beast Handlers, a Gladiator, and some infantry.
-Zaal with a bunch of Immortals, Ancestral Guardians, and Hakaar.

It's all really relative to what models/units look best to you. I'm a big fan of the Cataphract warriors. Your best bet would be to research the Warlocks you like most, who have a spell list you understand, a feat that works with the flow of your army, and looks appealing to you aesthetically.

Latest issue of No Quarter has a Skorne Power Progression article. Takes you all the way up to Unbound 100pts.

Can't say how good the article is though, I haven't read it yet.

Should be good as it was written by Watts, who is the most successful skorne player in US. He has been circling the tournaments since beginning of Hordes with Skorne and he plays with all of the casters, not just pMorgs and eMakeda like some of the succesful players.

Essential Skorne figs/ units are Titan Gladiator, Bronzeback Titan and paingiver beasthandlers. Skorne has really excellent heavy beasts and therefore lists tend to form around 2 to 3 heavies with fury management provided by beasthandlers. Good infantry choices are nihilators, venators with UA and swordsmen. Solos you'll most likely run are Aptimus Marketh, agonizer and from the mercs/ minions Orin Midwinter and Saxon Orrick.

Skorne has a lot of excellent figs to choose from if you like the oriental influence they sport, just look into my Dakka Gallery for some examples

Head over to the PP Skorne Community and read up on their tacticas. It is invaluable advice and the faction as a whole has a huge variety of playstyles based on which warlock you go with.

It's a good time to start Skorne. They just got a huge boost from Domination.

I disagree. I don't find pMorghoul a good 'lock to learn with.

eMakeda, MK, BB, Gladiator, Swordsman + UA and a max PGBH unit. 35pts of awesome that I learned Skorne with. From there, its easy to expand since it has the Holy Trinity, a solid infantry unit and the ever-present Beast Handlers.

i agree with em_en_oh_pee. pMorghoul is not the best caster to learn Skorne with ( mainly because he play quite differently from all the others) and Savages are pretty close to useless.
The suggested list is pretty nice and very competitive, but i suggest to learn to play without molik karn. Also Swordsman are nice and synergice well with eMakeda, i would suggest Nihilators who synergice with pretty much everyone.

Useful beginner stuff:

Warlocks: eMakeda, Hexeris, Xerxis

Heavy Beasts: Bronzeback Titan, Titan Cannoneer, ( later on Molik Karn)
Ligh Beasts: Cyclops Brute, Basilisk Drake
Units: Paingiver Beast handlers ( the most important guys!), Nihilators or Swordsman with Unit attachment
if you want to start with Xerxis: Cataphract Cetrati
Solos: Agonizer, Void Spirit

Useful Mercenaries and Minions that work for the Skorne: Saxon Orrick, Swamp Gobber bellows crew, Gatorman Posse

If you want to start with the battlebox, the recommondation would be to get a minimum unit of beast handlers and a agonizer. That will give you exactly 15 Points

Why not learn with MK? He is too good not to use!

I second this listing of models 95%. The Titan Cannoneer is pretty meh, whereas the Gladiator Titan brings an amazing, game winning animus and is usually the starting point for Skorne lists.
