Any ideas or suggestions to get a Warhammer 40k club started in my dorms?

Next Quarter I'm planning to bring my Army back with me to school so that I can show people what 40k is like but I only have an Imperial Guard army; any suggestions on what Army I should use to help people get into the game? I'm thinking Space Marines; but I don't have any Space Marine models and the AOBR squads cost too much for me to justify buying some just for tutorial purposes;

Anybody know where I can find some cut out paper space marines? I can get paper cut out vehicles(my plan is to have people play with paper models and sometimes borrow my models and after a while

Also whats a good way to get people into the fluff as well?

I also thought about making a portable paint set and perhaps paint in the dorm common room(its a big room with plenty of ventilation) so people can perhaps see how the hobby works(a golden demon speed paint winner at my old FLGS did something similar)

Not sure about most of it, but I think it is best to get people involved with the fluff.

Even if they become a WAAC player, they will still have an interest in something besides winning.

Two suggestions, if you're a roleplayer, try running a Dark Heresy game (probably easier than running Rogue Trader, Death Watch and definitely not Black Crusade for newbies). I'm not the only one I know who was suckered into the wonderful world of 40k and have an enourmous army I can't begin to finish assembling and painting because of the 40k RPGs.

The other would be to find one other person in your dorm who also definitely wants to play and get them to bring in their army, or at least buy a battleforce and put an army together.

Then you guys can sucker people in by having so much fun playing, and use your armies as your training armies

Oh, a third idea, my first couple games were just squad versus squad so I could get a feel for it. That's a bit cheaper, especially if you having a FLGS that sells second hand models.

I dunno. I'd say go with Deathwatch - no where near as much roleplaying in the game, and the basic premise is 'You're superhuman badasses, now go kill things dead'. Of course, it'll probably mean the OP will end up having all the players start Marine and Marine-variant armies!

good idea; Also there are some Dnd players that my roommate plays and they know about 40k as well(forgot to mention them); perhaps maybe I can ask them to help me get started;

One way thing that seems to sucker people in are the tanks and vehicles;

Also since there are quite a few Starcraft fans maybe Tyranids and Space Marines might sucker them in as well

Ah, good call Infinite. I didn't push it cos we're getting frustrated with our DW game cos our GM is treating it like a dungeon crawl and we want all the other aspects that go into being an SM. But yeah, you could totally run a game like that to give the new guys a feel for the 40k universe, and that way gently introduce the fluff and get them used to hearing "cogitator bank" instead of "computer" etc.

I've seen these 40k RPG games mentioned but I don't see them on the GW website. Are they not from there? Where can they be found online for sale?

Well most university's have a facebook page or some way you can get a word out, I might start there. Or just talk to people, yes it may make you look nerdy but hay, I found a group doing that.

The Emperor extends His will to us when we destroy the wicked and impure to reconquer the galaxy in His name. The Emperor leads the galaxy to righteousness, and thus we must petition for His judgement on the wicked... for it is judgement without mercy..

Make sure you have a plan to deal with the fact that 99% will see this hobby as really dorky.

GW passed the licence for the rpgs to Fantasy Flight Games (FFG), that's why you won't see them in GW (apart from them being semi-competently written - which is the other reason you won't find them in a GW store).

Pretty much any game store other than a GW house organ should be able to get them in.

Surprisingly untrue - I used to think that, but after actually talking to people about it and people seeing my painted models and everything, they actually think it's quite a cool hobby. Also the matter of the cost is mitigated to them when I explain that what they spend on expensive clothes on an almost weekly basis, I spend about half as much on a fun and constructive hobby

But really, I think that it's as low as 50-60% who think the hobby is really dorky and most of those people I wouldn't be talking to anyway xD

I'm with you, Lord Vader. A good few people at work are jealous that I and one of my work mates play 40k.
