first off, applogies if this is either

a) in the wrong area

or b) been answered before.

I am looking for some good looking cybernetics for some 'Ard as Nails' marine conversions I want to do. This 10 man squad will easily end up being the most expensive unit I have ever produced, but I want almost everything to be a conversion to one degree or another. I have already got the bases from Anvil, and am looking at getting some of the "Widowmaker" rifles once they are available. I want some lion head shoulderpads, so a visit to Scibor is not too far off, and some flexible ammo rails and ammo backpacks are on the cards too.

I will be stripping down the SM armour into component parts so I can re-position them and post the models how I want on the bases I have for them, but also want at least some of the squad to have bionics, but I just can't find some that I really like. I have seen some out there that I am not particularly impressed with, the legs are sold as whole legs and therefore are at set angles which reduces my freedom to pose the models.

I am sure I have seen some, although now it may just have been another member's work and not something I could buy, where a marine had a bionic thigh with a more normal lower leg armour and foot. As this therefore meant replacing only a part of the leg, I think it would give me more freedom in which parts I wanted to replace, and how I would be able to pose the models.

Does anyone here know where in the UK (preferrably) I could get such conversion bits from? Ideally I would like to be getting on with these guys from about the 15th December to the new year, as that is the holiday I have and the best chance of getting on with them other than the weekends next year. Although I have other work to do on these models, converting marine helm to be open face and converting backpacks to include weapon grips on several of them that are using either special or heavy weapons amongst other factors, I would like to get the major body parts to a state where I can glue legs to torso in the correct positions to look good on the bases.

Once I can get started on this project, look out for a blog on my progress.

Thanks for the effort, Kroothawk. Unfortunately I had already looked at Anvil, Bitspudlo, Kromlech, Maxmini, Chapterhouse, and Zinge.

I am positive I have seen a picture of a group of models smaller than that where only the thigh had been replaced, the lower leg and foot being the standard GW product. This impressed me as it gave the impression of allowing the leg to be posed how the modeller wanted - having presumably a seperrate pice for both the knee joint and the hip.

Having looked through so many threads, and so many after market supplier sites over the last week or so, I am begining to doubt myself though, and could be thinking of something that someone else converted, if so then the picture must be on here somewhere and I will continue to look until I find it again, then contact the owner of the picture to ask how it was done.

You are aware that the Bitspudlo Cyborg parts are all separate prostetics for exact this purpose, only put together as a complete cyborg because there were enough parts, right?

Kroot,

I thought those arts were good, but still as complete arms/legs not my first choice. I was also under the impression that they were Terminator sized, not marine sized.

Those Iron Hands parts, though not what I was sure I had seen previously, are better than the other things I have been looking at. Not going to be able to justify paying £25 just for a couple of parts though, will have to convert my own unless I can come up with something else.

I will have to have an in-depth look at Klausmasterflex's stuff later, but what I have seen is amazing. Might be enough to make me scratch my own cybernetics despite the time constraint I am under.

Not sure I like all his work though, not a fan of the un-neccessary (in my opinion) gearing. It comes across as bad steampunk to me.

Also have you thought about Necrons lots of new kits means you might find some leg/arm parts in the kits. Also you could try cutting up some of the old necron models http://www.bobnbootzmodels.co.uk/acatalog/Warhammer_40k_Necron_Second_Hand_Models.html

http://www.shapeways.com/shops/customminis?section=28mm+Bits+Custom+Design expensive but may help.

If you can't find the original pic you may struggle most cybernetics tend to be whole leg/arm and not parts thereof.

there is always forgeworld.... its a more viable option for you than for the rest of us i think.

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/SPACE-MARINE-CHARACTER-CONVERSION-SET.html

Barring this, I think your last remaining option is just to cop out and use necrons. cutting the necron legs off at the hip and working with what is left yields convincing arms after some reworking. I figure since marines still have their armor, the bionics would go under it anyway, but I'm guessing you want everything esposed. With that in mind, Grab some guitar string of varying guages, add the wires as power and control, and use some Kneadadite to flesh it out some more. What I have done for my special characters is take the knee pads and wear them down a bit so I could add a Terminator Heraldry bit over it and gussy up the armor. I've done the same thing by sticking a heraldry bit onto the marines pistol-wielding arm to represent artificer armor, I think the same thing can be done here to add character to your models.

Also, I just rememberd Puppetswar, it was not on your list of checked out and inadequate so i post it here;

Thanks all for your efforts.

Like poda_t, I believe that most bionics would go under the standard armour, but wanted to show a couple where maybe the armour had taken enough damage as to have been discarded as adding too much weight for the protection afforded by what was left, hence for example, wanting to show a standard armoured lower leg, but a bionic thigh.

And as I only wanted 1 or 2 models in the squad of 10 to have them, paying £25 for another squad of 10 didn't seem like good sense to me. Not only was it more money than I was perpared to spend on this single modelling project, I was highly unlikely to use any of the remaining parts so could not even justify the cost by adding bits to my bits box for future use.

So for the time being, I will either go with the FW set, minimising my addition of parts and cost, and use them in further conversion work to add lower leg armour to the single bionic leg (The only bionic leg I wanted, hence the reluctance to use the bitspudlo parts) and a couple of the arms as is, or I will scratch-build my own based on what I have seen in some of the other pictures and sets available.

I will be off-line from the 15th December, but will be putting up a blog of my work early in the new year. In the mean time, I may well start a blog on some other work I have been doing of late, "28mm Federation command Squad" from the TV series "Blake's 7".

I suggest once you have converted the parts that suit your needs you cast them and sell them, there is clearly a massive market in cybernetic thighs!

If your going to do something wrong, do it right!!!!

I just came across a part that came from the second edition necrons:

The scale might be a wee bit off, but after comparing them, I think they make brilliant bionic parts for the marines.
