Greetings all,
I've managed to get my father interested in 40K and I was hoping I could find a good starting army for him besides Marines. He would prefer a challenge, and would like to have an army full of good killing units (not particularly tough or large) I've thought on it and I think an army that fits this niche is Dark Eldar. What would you recommend?

Not Dark Eldar or Necrons. Those require careful coordination and great army list building.
I would recommend maybe IG? Possibly Tau?
But in reality what models does he like best? That's the army he should be running.

All Dark Eldar require is throwing masses of Venom-MSU-spam at the enemy, rowboating behind them with Ravager-spam. Easily the most brainless army currently in 40K. Space Marines actually require more synergy and forethought than Dark Eldar these days.
Why cant your father choose for himself?

Because he isn't particularly sure about what each army is specialized for. I'm going to go along the lines of the "I like the look of this army" so he can pick for himself, rather than me trying to pointlessly deduct which army "Can kill my army", without any sort of way of killing me in mind.

How most of us got started. I started Dark Angels cause I thought the bikes looked awesome..... Needless to say I own bikes but never use them on the table anymore. They have a nice place on my shelf but they are by far the worst looking models (paint/assembly) wise that I have done. But gotta start somewhere.

Orks, or Eldar might be two good choices, they have several strong units, but also some poor ones, and are fairly balanced.
