Hello all,
I am fairly new to 40k. Having seen my brothers play a few times, I decided to give it a try. I know pretty much all the rules, but maybe not all the specifics.
i have played some tau and some necron, mostly fighting SM(DA and ultra) and Eldar or DE. So far, tau seems a little to tactical for me. It was hard to shoot while keeping out of range of a deadly assault. I really did enjoy the XV8 battlesuits though, and the supper powerful long range weapons. On the necron side, they seem like a cool army, but the phalanx marching up the field didnt really do it for me. Additionally, it was difficult to get in range to actually do some serious damage. The mono and dstryrs were pretty awesome though. The problems I had with these two armies was largely from my lack of play, and would most likely disappear with practice.
Now onto the real question: what army do I choose for myself. From general overviews, Chaos space marine looks really interesting. They have heavy armour, good shooting AND good assaulting which seems to have a slight advantage in 5th edition with all the cover saves against shooting. (Tau markerlights are awesome against this though) I also like the anti - emperor aspect of the army. I am a little sick of all the SM armies and human armies. (No offense to any human armies, my brother plays DA and loves them) Overall Chaos seems well balanced and able to pull off wins, which of course is a big factor.
After that, I'm not too sure what else I might be interested in. I thought about maybe sisters of battle since they are good flamers (I think) which is a cool because its close range and takes away the ever valuable cover saves.
Some suggestions would be a huge help, and maybe a little tactics summary of the army you suggest. Sorry for the repeated topic post.

Just avoid sisters. Beyond that pick the army you like the look of best. You can build a second army at a later date once you learn more about the game. Having cool models is always important to make you like the game.

Sisters are some of the worse models. Incredibly expensive, and they're all metal.

Welcome. Tau are amazing at shooting, but die in CC really fast. But if you want to hide, and shoot all day then Tau would be your best bet.

IMO, it seems that you've already chosen your army - CSM.
What you need to consider is the three aspects of the hobby - Gameplay, Fluff and Painting/Modelling.
Do you think CSM seem to be amongst the armies giving you the gameplay you want, regarding tactics, power level etc?
Is the fluff behind the army good? Do you like it?
Do you think painting the army is fun (okay, so I know not everyone thinks painting is fun... But does it seem more fun or at least of equal fun to paint as other armies?). Do you like the models / look? And if you're interested, does it seem to provide some good conversion opportunities? If you're new, just a little reposing or adding bitz to character to make him even more badass might be sufficient, but (at least I think) still fun.

Those questions are what I think people should ask themselves when getting a new army. Chaos Space Marines feels like a solid choice, and you can go pretty much any way regarding how to play them.

From what I've read... I think that, other than CSM, Newcrons might fit (Did you play with the Oldcrons?), Grey Knights too (Although Imperium)... Dark Eldar and Eldar might be a bit fragile since you seemed to like the heavy armour. Tyranids are a straightforward, assaulty army that could go slightly on the more Elite-side if you unprefer horde.

Welcome to dakka.

These kind of armies are not very, er, plug-and-go. You see the thing is some of the less updated rules are often rather weakened over time at a comparison to the opposition. But of course this is countered by the fact that there is a load of tricks out there in the world that can help you. I mean Eldar were nightmares to play even when they first came out. They took a lot of practice and hard work but when you had them sorted they play brilliantly. But they age with time, sadly. They are still playable, but it really helps to do research. There are so many units that people have learned to counter or the modern rules are no longer supporting.

some armies are very plug-and-go in the sense that they are really easy to be competitive or have fun with. Such as Some of the more modern codexes like normal marines, BA, DE, Tyranids, Guard and the like. While also others were fun and easy to play even when their last codex was out. Like orks, and, er. Well that's almost it. Chaos aren't too bad TBH, they could be better. DA are rather hard to pick up. But orks are easy and fun, as a lot of people agree on this forum. Hence the title.

Just NOT SOB. Unless you use Melissa's Fandex and have a high budget.

Welcome to Dakka!

If you like CSM you should just start on a box of regular chaos marines and some other basic stuff and run a game or two and see if you like it, anyways the models themselves look awesome too, then seem to be a solid force as an army, just start and go! just how i started on my space wolves just because i liked the models(and wolves are my favorite animals tbh ) in have a massive force of over 4k

Hi Welcome. I ended up choosing Orcs and have been very happy. I have also played my son's Tyrannids. One thing I like about both armies (and this probably true generally) is that there are many styles of army within the army. So I like having a big horde irks with a couple vehicles to bring some of them to the front line quickly.

But my son's tyrannies aren't a horde, they are mainly big monsters which he likes. So I guess even with the army, you have a lot of latitude to find your own style.

+ for this

Orks are simply awesome, a nice well balanced army, CSM are good as well, but their codex is starting to get pretty old, and with 6th edition rumored to be on the way, if they don't get one soon, they won't be a solid army anymore...

But I am a firm believer of just get whatever army you want, regardless of how competitive it is.....

CSM used to be a horribly overpowered army... and I played a Nurgle force of "The Fallen"... So I must admit to the Cheese...
But then came the 5th ed Dex... and CSM got Nerfed. Badly so.

Then I found the light, and truth...
Aherm... Den I finded da Lite, an troof, of da Waaagh!!!

NOT a "Oh, hi! You want to play with your 4th ed CSM... Okay, you win... Next!"

I usually win 50% of the time with da Boyz... but even losing with them is gloriously fun. I usually lose because of Orky-Mishappy-Goodness. They are silly, so, if you don't mind your army killing itself... they are a lot of fun.

5th ed CSM started to tread into Ork territory with the Dreadnoughts, (which was one of my main reasons for choosing CSM), as they will oft-times chew up your forces with a fire frenzy on turn 1. So if you go with CSM... avoid ranged weapons on the Dreads.

" It says in the rules that if there are no models from one side left on the table, then that side has lost. What it DOESN'T say is that I can't pick my opponent's models up and throw them on the floor, so if I'm losing the game, all I have to do is pick my opponents models up and throw them on the floor, and then I WIN! YAY! Woohoo. Loophole: FOUND! "
