So I did buy into the Necrons upon release and have finally painted up some(curse computer games and university work ) anyway, here is the current steps I follow to paint them.

1. Black base coat
2. Coat the armourish parts in Mechrite Red
3. Cover red parts in my Metallic Red paint (A 2:1 ratio of Red Gore and Mithril Silver)
4. Wash red parts in Baal Red wash since the Metallic red is a bit too bright.
5. Paint Metallic portions in Boltgun Metal
6. Paint Green details.

And a pic for the steps(may not be best quality currently):

NOTE: Steps 4 and 5 look no different but trust me there is.

EDIT:May turn this into a blog if I post stuff often enough.

I like... and am strangely impressed.

I mean I am not exactly 'weathered' when it comes to 40k, but I've never really seen a hybrid scheme like this... Necrons tend to beg for colour but I have a soft spot for the 'default' metallic scheme... you've merged both and thusly gained my approval

Nice metallic red, I'd done my own Necrons red a few weeks back and had been told that a metallic red would really give them an edge. I hadnt been overly sold on the idea but you've carried it off really well.

The boltgun metal bits might benefit from a wash/highlight to give them a little more depth

That could work. Might consider another color to go with it to make them stand out? Maybe a metalic yellow?

Tbh the metallic red took alot of patience to get right, but now I can replicate it quickly. Im not too fond of the metallic yellow I must admit. I do have another metallic paint which was going to originally base these guys on, its a metallic purple using Mithril Silver and the purple(forgot the name). So maybe the purple could work.

If you want, look at my blog i made a purple that had to be washed down with badab black to not make it quite as bright but it was 3 parts lich/2 parts boltgun. Then washed with purple makes it look sharp.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
O also look towards the bottom where I added some other color highlites into parts of it. May want to consider some of those types of colors or even a rod paint. I am not going to go back and do that now but it might be something to consider.

Oh wow that purple does indeed look awesome. I currently have a test model(the poor high elf XD) who I just slap paint onto, currently got the purple on him so im going to give it a wash and see how it looks.

Iv done both and tbh I prefer the purple wash, helps keep it a bit more vibrant.

Might have to give it a shot sometime, but way too much painted to go back and change now. Plus my blue body really needs the black. So I just wash the whole model in black. Glad to hear the purple worked out even better

Should toss some wet pictures up real quick so i can see how it looks.

Didn't manage to get any pics earlier, had some stuff to attend to.

I do however have a comparison shot of washing the purple over the metallic purple though. The base purple is the one on the robes. The helmet has the washes applied.

My immortals are done using a similar scheme. I went with a warm gold color for their guns and it complements the red nicely. I used Shining Gold as a basecoat, drybrushed Mithral Silver to catch the edges, then washed with Gryphonne Sepia twice.

Hey do you just do shining gold or do you do a mix with scortched earth? I found shining gold is very hard to stay without a lower coat of scorched earth 1:1.

I never considered gold tbh. The only downside i can see is that it (to me) would look a bit Khorneish. Thats why purple was a good choice, still compliments the red but doesn't instantly remind me of anything else.

That red looks a little pink - is that the mithril silver or the lighting? Either way, neat work, liking the green eyes.

It's the silver. The red that I get by basecoating with a chrome spray paint then using 2 coats of red ink looks pretty much the same.

The gold is brighter than the red/brass combo typical of Khornates and I don't think there's any visible relation between the two. I agree the purple/red is a nice combination as well, but close on the color wheel. Gold would add some nice contrast if added in small doses, say accenting certain parts of the gun like the hatchet.

I usually just do the Shining Gold by itself, with two coats. It would stand out a little better over a brown basecoat, though. When it comes to painting necrons, I take the fast and easy way over the detailed and difficult. My other armies get a little more attention to detail.

Its a bit of both I would say, while the paint itself does look a lil pink the flash of the camera also makes it brighter. The wash helps darken it up a bit.

While the green provides a nice contrast I really dont like them atm. I need to improve my technique in painting them, the eyes are so god damn small.

Hey guys got an update on my necrons, though even this pic is still very much WIP.

Iv painted the gun but unsure if it works, I know its not the best painted mini atm. Its pretty much a test for now. The metallic red im keeping though.

Colours go together most well! The green on the guns really needs some highlighting though.

And as for the colours on the gun 'working'... they work for the Goblin (Spiderman), no?

Well, it works if you are going for the TMNS/1980's bad guy/comic book vibe. If that is what your after you're probably good.

It is a bit much for me personally. I like the red, but you have too many bright points of interest. I would tone down the whole thing and go with one color scheme.

The reason Necrons can usually use such bright greens is because they lack other colors. The same is true of the necron armies that go for bright blue's.

Here you have bright green, red, and purple all competing, and it just feels busy. I think you could do red and green, but I would leave the rest just metal colored.

Again, unless you are going to the comic book/1980's vibe, which, while difficult to pull off, could result in an interesting army.

Yea I got the feeling of it being too busy aswell to begin with. However looking at it now, it really doesnt look that bad. I will still try a boltgun/green gaus flayer jsut to compare. It would also be that the green clashes with both the red and purple so maybe a darker blue would work better.

Ill get some test bits to try out.

Loving the color scheme, but the purple gun seems out of place, no matter what though it's a good paint job
