Right, to expand on my question in http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/120/414139.page#3639202 and to not derail said thread, I ask the question here: what evidence is there that the majority of the media in the US is "leftist"? As someone who doesn't live in America myself, I'd love some input from those of you who do on this question. I see the claim being tossed around casually quite often (both in debate over Swedish media as well as American, but that's a different story), but I've yet to see any (civil) discussion of the subject.

The way I've always known it...most American media has been considered to have leftist influences (stations such as CNN) and of course then there's Fox which is right winged...
1.) Fox News Channel has a conservative bias.
2.) Fox News Channel has much greater market share of the American mainstream media than other media outlets ("bigger than the other 3 largest broadcast news shows combined")
3.) Ipso Facto, American news media has a conservative bias.
one unbiased source

Wait, sweet Emperor, is that link for real? Anyone that wants a good laugh can read their page on Sweden; appearently we have issues with bestiality, which proves that atheism and evolution is false.

I find it odd... because I'm obviously left wing. I can correctly identify the political bias of UK Newspapers. I know the Guardian is left wing, that the Independent is mostly centre, and that most tabloids like the Daily Mail and the Sun are right wing to a lesser or greater extent.
I find it absolutely fascinating that on that other thread there are claims from some US forum members like "there hasn't been a right wing press here for a long time" and "the media is 99% leftist".
These are obviously false statements. They wouldn't be true in the UK, which is more left wing in general, and the certainly aren't true in the US which has a substantial right wing bias in sections of its media and print.n I can only guess that some people have been bombarded with the output of Fox News for so long they are normalised to it and can't see it for what it is.
The mix of politics in the media is the result of a free society. The only societies that have media with a near total political slant one way or the other are those that are state controlled. The UK and US are not like that. I don't agree with a lot of right wing views, and much of that spewing out of the right wing press is simply venomous bile. But the fact is that we have a media that represents a spread of the political spectrum and I support that and the freedom of speech.
As a left-wing person I don't claim that the whole of the media is right wing against me. I think there is a very strong right presence in the tabloids but the left has good representation too. I'm also not deluded to think that those left wing publications are free from bias, and it's just the stuff I don't like which can't hold an objective view.
Right wing people who claim that the media is heavily left-wing slanted against them, and that the right-wing media sources they enjoy are actually unbiased sources, are just wrong. Totally and utterly wrong. An unrealistic view of the world, and frankly a poor assessment of the bias of the news sources available to them.

Funnily enough, I've heard people accuse Fox news of being lefty.
Because it wasn't far right enough for them.
The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I'm pretty sure that fox media isn't just the largest, but it's viewership outnumbers CNN,CNBC,MSNBC combined. So I'd say that the American news media is rightist. My personal opinion has always been that it's leftist, but facts win out.

"leftist" by american standards means not leaving the poor to starve to death, so the fact that fox is considered "right-wing" is telling.
I'm just grateful we have the BBC.

Do you think its correct to assess the state of the media by viewership?
I'm not trying to be insulting, or anything, but what people will watch doesn't necessarily bare on the state of what is being broadcast.

This is generally what I have seen, though I would replace the sentiment of victimization with one of "neutral statements are bad when you don't have neutral beliefs."

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

The whole issue of bias is a total misdirect, getting people to worry about a non-issue and ignore the real problem - US news is typically devoid of content and analysis. Along with tight budgets, tighter deadlines and a whole lot of laziness, the worry news media has over being called bias by either side of politics actually contributes to the poor quality of the stories they present, as they just default to repeating the claims made by each side, and don't bother to check to see if the things claimed by either side are actually true. This is producing an environment in which more cynical politicians are happy to make claims that will play well to the base even if they're absolute bs, because they know they won't get called on it.
The real question should never be 'did that story support one side of politics more than the other?' but 'was the information presented true, and is it important?'
Oh, and on the FOX news is bigger than all the cable media, therefore American media leans right thing... well sure, FOX news is more than half the total viewership of cable news. But it's cable news. Being the biggest is like being the biggest funk/disco hybrid three piece to come out of Romania. The total number of viewers for cable news is a trivially small portion of total broadcasting.
“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Well, numbers based on consistent methodology, anyway.

See, I don't think that's true. I think there is either too much analysis, or too much bad analysis.
You get, on one hand, David Gergen (who is fantastic) and on the other Roland Martin (who is a tosser).

I think anyone who believes the media isn't completely in the pocket of right wing corporatists are just slathering militia types with a thin grasp of reality. With Fox dominating the internet, cable, network, public TV, and newsprint, we have to resort to alternate weeklies just to stay informed of whats really going on, what The Man really is doing. I thank the Great Nothingness that at least we have one center moderate news source - the New York Times - as a shining beacon of unbiased news in a darkness of rightwingedness.
