I started playing 40k about 2 years ago, i started as tyranids because all of my friends wanted someone who had a different army, so they chose for me.

I enjoyed nids i wont lie until the new codex came out shortly after i began and it lost me with all the rule changes, armor changes and the like. so i started playing an eldar army ( another choice by my friends ) and they were ejoyable to me in the fluff but i couldnt get used to anything about them on the tabletop.

After not playing for about a year i find myself wanting to play again. the hobby shop i used to go to closed down so the nearest place to find people to play is an hour drive away. I currently own a tiny force of Tau, and Assault on Black Reach Space Marines. The two armies i have had a very big interest in are Space Wolves and Orks.

Any recommendations or anything to help me decide whether i should rejoin the hobby and your opinions on my army decisions?

Staying on target.....

Out of two you have mentioned go for Orks, not only is it easy to get hold of a hoard (BR + BF's) but theres a lot of creativity with them

And also there's something thats just getting a bit dull about SW's.....

I have never played either force and both really interest me. some of my friends say its because of how i play video games. in shooting games in always the sniper, ( long fangs ), and in fantasy style games im always a tank that just runs into the fray killing everything in my path, ( almost anything in ork army if im not mistaken )

If you like winning, hate losing units, and like "heroic" models and characters... go SW

If you like brutal humor, customizing models, and mindless violence (and don't mind losing half your army to win)... go Orks.

As you can see by my sig, I play both passing well, and would say that I find SW more collectible and more deadly... but I really enjoy modelling the Orks and they're a nice change in pace.

i am also a first time painter. painting one piece with what i have. no basecoat or wash. so literally basecoated with regal blue, then chaos blacked the whole gun. then while on the eyes and line on the head, as well as the shoulder trim and symbol on the shoulder.

this is ofcourse on just 1 sm that i got from AoBR since i havent any essentials im making do with what i have. depending on how this model turns out will decide what i do with the rest of my models

Orks are very friendly for a first time painter. Even If you paint them poorly, it comes out looking all right due to the ramshackle nature of Ork equipment.

Sounds painter friendly enough for me. they do usually look roughed up so technically ill be painting them perfectly lol.

i mean heck the space marine doesnt look HORRID, the eyes and shoulders could be a little better but small spots with shaky hands is tricky. thinking about posting some pics later.
