Just a quick question. Here's my dilemma: if I took a unit of Ork Boyz, and upgraded one of them to a Nob, do I actually need a physical model of the Nob? Also, does this apply to every army in 40k?

If you are playing a friendly game, and the Nob is drastically different, make sure your opponent is OK with a 'counts as'/proxy (most people are fine with proxies/counts as to some degree). In regards to tournaments, almost everyone I know of is WYSIWYG, and you would need the appropriate model. This also applies to all other armies.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

think of it this way if you play with an army of 100 blank bases how are you going to be able to tell which model is which? The nob or any special model within units needs to be easily identified not only for game flow but different special weapons have to be kept track of to prevent cheating.Your opponent isnt going to like a model suddenly having a melta then a the same model has a flamer then the gun teleports to the other side of the unit when needed . Weapons are pretty much the only thing people care about with models .If at all possible you could take a boy model and make a powerklaw out of spare choppas as a nob(which is pretty much the only thing you ever want to give your nobs).

its also appropriate for models with different gear, lets say shoota boys, slugga boys, big shootas or for the nob, choppa, big choppa, powerklaw.

although i dont really know how you can have nob problems as one comes with the box and 5 come in AOBR

Alright, thanks for the help everyone. I kinda thought that WSIWYG would be the case. Just wanted to clarify and make sure that I understood this properly.
