Recently I managed to get my hands on some Nids stuffs from a friend. He owed me some $, couldn't settle it, & gave me his Nids' stuffs instead.

The problem is, I don't have any inklings on how to make a workable Nids list. Most of the regular Nids players here have gone Instinctive Behaviour due to the lure of GK & Crons. With the absence of active Hive Minds, I was thinking that this would be a good opportunity to play something different than the others.

What I have are 2 boxes of Tyrannid Warriors, 4 Carnifexes, 15+ Stealers, 4 Hive Guards & 2 Tentacly looking models (venomthropes?). Any ideas where should I start & what good combos that I can use here? FYI, we almost always play at 1750pts here in Malaysia.

Although I've been in the game for almost a decade, but I've never played anything other than humies & Orkses. Bugs are totally ALIEN to me!

I hope you're good at converting. The carnifexes will most benefit you from turning 2 of them into tervigons, the other 2 you can probably keep as carnifexes.

The hiveguard are good and so are the venomthropes, this is where the boxes of warriors come in handy, they are good as everything else except tyranid warriors, they can be converted in pretty much anything else that you want. So I'd say convert atleast one into a tyranid prime, put regen on it and place it with the venomthropes.

Another 2 of the warriors convert into hive guard so you can have 2 groups of 3. Or if you decide not to run the venomthropes, convert another 3 to have 3 squads of 3.

You can also convert some warriors into tyrant guard and then get yourself a hive tyrants (depending on your converting skills you might even be able to make one out of one of the carnifexes and make a hive tyrant or swarmlord.

The genestealers, I have no idea how many you actually have, but I like to run them in groups of 10-12 with toxin sacs (The swarmlord is very good in synergy with them for reserves and rerolling flanks).

Then you're going to need a whole bunch of gribblies. 2 groups of gaunts backed up with 2 tervigons can be very good. This combined with the genestealers gives you 5-6 troops witht he ability to make more, objectives missions are your friends and in kill points you don't have to make more. The tervigon also has one of the sneakiest weapons, the gaunt cannon.

So let's see.....

HQ

Swarlord w/ 2x Tyrant Guard

ELITES

3x Hiveguard

3x Hiveguard

TROOPS

14x Gaunts

Tervigon w/ Catalyst, TS, AG

14x Gaunts

Tervigon w/ Catlyst, TS, AG

10x Genestealers w/ TS

HEAVY SUPPORT

2x Carnifex w/ Devourers with brainleech worms

The swarmlord squad is expensive, but he buffs your genestealers and is a monster in combat, also in the squad it means he can get cover saves from the gaunts.

Or you can swap out his squad (because it is expensive) and replace him with

Tyranid Prime w/ 2x Bonesword, regen

2x Venomthropes

10x Genestealers w/ TS

Toxin sacs are bad for MCs. You'll basically always do better with just using their Strength to wound. Don't waste the points.

I was thinking of using the 4 Carnifexen to field 2 broods of 2 Carnifexen with 2 T/L Devourers, Adrenal Glands, Frag Spines, Regeneration. These 2 Dakka-Fex units will be followed closely by the Venomthropes & a Tyrant with Old Adversary so that they can benefit from Prefered Enemy USR.

I am thinking of splitting the 16 Genestealers into 3 units of 6, each being led by a Broodlord. The plan is to infiltrate them out of sight within 12" & cast Aura of Despair. Combo with the effect of the Devourer shots, hopefully the targets will fail their morale checks.

Tervigons seem to be a good element in a Nid army (at least from what I've read in the Net). But I would have to convert it from something, not sure what. If I can take 2, then I can cast Onslought to make enable the Dakka-Fexen to get closer before shooting. Or, I can opt to cast Catalyst to give the Dakka-Fexen FnP. Still, converting Tervigons seems to be a lot of work.

The Warriors, I'm thinking of making a unit of 5, all equipped with Toxin Sacs, Devourers, Lashwhips & Boneswords. They'll deepstrike via a Mycetic Spore.

So, the core of my list would be:
1. Hive Tyrant - Need to get 1 of this big bug.
2. Broodlords - Need to get 3 of these.
3. 15 Genestealers (split into 3 units) - checked.
4. 5 Warriors - deepstrike via Mycetic Spore.
5. 1 Tervigon - Need to convert them from something.
6. Termagants - Need to get how many..2 boxes?
7. 2 Venomthropes - Checked.
8. 4 Hive Guards (split into 2 units) - checked.
9. 4 Carnifexen (split into 2 units) - checked.

Wow..hopefully I can squeezed all these into my 1750pts list.

Unfortunately aura of despair only works in the assault phase so won't combo with devourers, there was much hope for this right up until people read that it only lasted for our assault phase. With that in mind I'd advise against taking small groups of genestealers, since the broodlord is expensive and a group of 6 thanks to the lower armour save will make them extremely easy to wipe out while doing very little damage.

If you're set on the carnifexes being trailed by the hive tyrant, which sounds like an solid idea, I'd give the tyrant two sets of devourers aswell to join in the shooting, and give him wings so he isn't left in the lurch.

Tervigons are a godsend to the tyranids and I can't think of many lists where a couple wouldn't work and yes onslaught would help the carnifexes get closer, just remember it doesn't make them fleet.

Also remember that any strength 8 weapons aimed at the warriors will ID them, and they won't get armour saves since I can't think of any S8 weapons off the top of my head that won't beat their armour.

You get 12 termagants per box now, so I'd recommend getting atleast 3 boxes, so you can get between 15-18 per group, any smaller than that and you're liable to have them all killed without doing anything useful. Although if you get two squads of 10 (minimum) if you just want to be able to make the tervigons troops
