I am looking to make a bunch of scatter terrain for a themed terrain set featuring barrels and am curious what others have found as the best/cheapest source for either barrels that are single pieces or pre-made/cast piles/stacks of barrels?
I have a bunch of the GW ones, but am looking for other sources.
Thoughts?

Check model train shops and websites. You'll find a much wider variety of styles and sizes. Wargaming barrels tend to be more expensive than model train barrels from what I've seen.

You mean metal barrels, not wooden ones? Military model shops sell 1:35 barrels around the size of the GW ones - the kits usually come with jerrycans as well.

Sheet styrne pack: comes with a thick set of rods, thick enough to pass for barrels. snip some thin styrene strips to glue on as banding, and punch a wee hold through one of the banded sections. glue the ends to more styrne, cut it out, file it off, and you're done. It's about as cheap as it gets and the practice helps.

Best price I have found. Not sure if they are quite the right scale as I have never bought them, so it would be worth looking at them online first.

I have been going through some Electrical left-overs left behind by the electrician after he finished wiring up our renovations.
2m of flex-conduit. If I cut them up into about 8 'rings' sections, they work out around the same height as the GW plastic ones.
A 20mm circular hole punch gives me covers for them and a frantic afternoon of gluing gives me a stack of drums. A good thing as my Infinity table needs a lot more in the way of terrain.

You should check out Hirsts Arts SciFi molds.
Allot of the scifi barrels and crates are licienced resin copies of these. Just buy the mold for less than $25 and make as many of your own as you like. Ideal for filling a table.

I got a bunch of loose drums from Pegasus a few years back, but I don't see them offered on the website, anymore. I recall them being reasonably priced, all things considered, but I think they've been axed in favor of the prepainted sets, like the one lord_blackfang posted. Might be able to find them in individual sellers' stock, though I don't know how much the price may have changed.

Wooden dowels, string & glue will work.
There's only three actual GW drums in this picture...

YEAH. The Hirst lines have a few good barrel. If you don't want to do the molding, you can buy ones from people who do.
Either this or the bottlecaps is the way to go IMHO

I've used 1" PVC connectors as barrels. They're a little on the large side, but look great and you can get packs of 10 or more from your hardware stores very cheap.
