Subject: To pod or not to pod?

Hey, I've been debating whether to put my dreadnought in a drop pod or to make it venerable. This mostly applies at the 750 point level (as i can fit it both in easily at 1000 points). The last two games I played I took the dreadnought with venerable, and walking it across the board as my lone mid/short range unit hurt bad. My idea with it in the pod would be to drop it behind his lines, serving as a distraction from the rest of my army (which is largely a glass hammer). My wondering is is it better to drop it in, or beef it up with venerable? Any general advice on my list is welcome as always.
750 Black Templars:
EC 110
ATWDTW
Crusader Squad 1 151
Las/plas
3x Bolters
Rhino
Crusader Squad 2 151
Las/plas
3x Bolters
Rhino
Venerable Dreadnought 135
Assaultcannon
Tank Hunters
Land Speeder Typhoon x3 210
Total: 757
1000 Points:
add 3x Land Speeder Typhoon
add drop pod (for dreadnought)

Personally I put mine in a pod, although I run an Ironclad. It has an important job which is getting to the front lines to tie up and cause damage asap. I would use the pod. Walking a dread usually never does work out well especially since you need it up close fast.

Black Templar cant take an ironclad or furioso, so a stock dread is our best option. I'm just worried because it's my only bit of distracting cc, and I'm not sure it'd be better for it to have more staying power with venerable or hit his back lines with the pod.

If it's the only thing coming down in a pod it will have one shot before it get's melta guned off the table. It's too expensive and not reliable enough of a tank killer to use like that IMO.
Just a general comment, your list looks very 4th edition. I personally have found this style of gunline army not all that effective anymore. You're experience may be different but it seems to me an outdated style of fighting with an army that's not designed for it anyway.

OK to state the unwritten comment: BT drop pods do not come on in the first turn.
This is good and bad. Take the pod. Then use it if you can get your army over to support by the time the dread arrives or do not use it and let it land late to contest objectives.

I'm gonna try it with the pod and with venerable, and then without the dreadnought as a whole, and see how it goes. What would you guys recommend for a shooty BT army instead of the dreadnought? I'm looking to solidify my list a bit and draw fire away from the speeders.

preds, 5 termies with 2CML/ ACs, more dreads, upgrading to lasbacks.
Are all good shooty options. It is hard to balance the cheapest of typhoons with the armour elsewhere in the list, if only were not so cheap
