Setup.

Ben is a great player in both skill and execution. He has always been a contender in leagues and would be in the top spot if it weren’t for some absences due to work and family.
When the pairings were announced we heard our names and exchange evil grins.

Ben knew that if he could get into my lines it would be game over and vice versa I knew if I could stay out of combat it would be game over.

After setting up the table and exchanging lists we roll to see who goes first… and I roll a 5! But Ben beats me with a 6…

He decides to go first.

Ben deploys pretty central giving him options on where to point and shoot. With the ruins in the center and the large column in his deployment zone giving lots of cover in case I seize.

The Stormravens are loaded with Purifiers/Librarian and he holds Crowe in reserves.

Since my army is designed in 3’s and not knowing where he will turbo too I deploy a Crusader Squad, Terminator squad and Typhoon squad in the center, left and right side.

That way if he turbo boosts to either side of the center ruins 2/3 of my army will be able to shoot at the ravens.

I roll to seize and...roll a 5.

Grey Knight 1

Stormravens boost forward with the ruin to their right and psyflemen line up to take some shots on speeders.

The unit of Purifiers in the rhino also hugs the ruins and pops smoke.

I deploy skillfully and his pysflemen can’t really get a beat on the Speeders and he’s forced to shoot at terminators and crusaders which make their saves.

One raven uses power of the machines spirit to shoot it’s multimelta at my squad of two typhoons blowing up ones of them. The explosion is large but fails todo any damage.

Black Templar 1
The sky is darkened with the streaks of missile smoke….

This is the crucial turn; since I can draw line of sight to at least part of his Stormravens there isn’t much need to move.

I do turboboost the Marshal up to go Dread hunting in the subsequent turns.

The game is pretty much determined in this shooting phase.

I unleash volley of tank hunting missiles at lead storm raven. Ben warms up his Librarian to cast shrouding and he rolls box cars! He also takes a wound from perils as well.

Ben’s heart sunk alittle…

Even with a 4+ cover save all the missile, lascannon and stormbolter fire reduces his forces significantly and tar pits him in the center.

I managed to kill all but one Purifier in the lead StormRaven.

The other Storm raven explodes and spills the Librarain and unit into a crater.

The rhino is immobilized in the center as well.

Grey Knight 2.

The silver boys press on.

Not discouraged Ben switches his game plan to start sniping easy Kill points and not give up any more.

He rolls for reserves and Crowe lines up to take the Marshall Head on.

He disembarks the Purifier squad in the rhino into the ruins and re embarks the single Purifier into the rhino as not to be sniped.

The Librarian and his posse scoot over to make use of the downed Stormraven.

Ben then starts lining up his Dreads to start shooting down Speeders.

The resulting shooting from the dreads manages to kill the remaining speeder of the duo kill 2 crusaders to which I pass their zeal test.

Crowe prepares his sword kata and charges the Marshall dealing 2 rending wounds. The return fist extinguishes his light but not without a heroic sacrifice.

BT 2

Psyflemen are good…. Too good.

Making them my new priority target I start to shuffle to the right and do the missile time warp.

I managed to snip a dread out of cover and wreak the rhino spilling out the solo Purifier.

The remaining forces on the left flank start to work on the purifiers in the center ruin.

Missiles and heavy bolters reduce the squad down to 6 and they goto ground.

BT 5 KP GK 2 KP

Grey Knight 3.

Not willing to take the chance and leave the safety of the center Ben positions his dreads to shoot the speeders again.

This time he manages to blow one up and wreak some missile systems and bolters.

BT 3

Again the Templars shift to right and unleash Missile Death.

Continuing with the peppering of the crusaders in the center I reduce them to 3 even with a 2+ cover save from going to ground a shrouding.

Te rest of my army must be running low on ammo because the Grey knights take no further casualties.

BT & GK Turns 4-6

The rest of the game pretty much consisted of Ben casting Shrouding and going to ground. I managed to finish off the Purifier squad in the center ruin. The single Purifer managed to escape as well as the larger Purifier squad with the librarian and 2 Dreads. 2+ cover is no joke!

I lose a single terminator from autocannon fire.

At the end of it BT 6 Kill points GK 2 Kill points

Initiates Geoff, Mike, Bob and Marshall Fay met glorious death and hopefully have their geneseed recovered.

Here is the finally shot of the board with Ben thinking “If I only passed that initial Shrouding….”

Ben and I both agreed that it would have been a completely different game and that we’ll have to get a rematch in.

Thanks for reading.

Week 2

Let’s just say I played Dark Eldar and Skimmer av 10 Spam doesn’t agree with alpha striking Templars….

Thanks Dave...I now have visions of Terminators doing the pelvic thrust.
Good report and a really tough matchup.

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

Your opponent relied on a gimmick and because of the dice roll he essentially lost the game because of that gimmick.

You relied on massive amounts of firepower. That is how I play, and most of my armies I have are geared that way.

Better army concept to me won that day. Good win.

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.
