At some point in the foreseeable future, I'll be (thankfully) in a position to spend a seriously large chunk of change on purchasing armies for W40k. I'm still pretty new to the game and have not totally grasped the rules for building armies and what's allowed and such. I've not read any particular Codex all the way through, either. So in light of that, I was wondering if some kind person with good knowledge of things, could suggest two different purchasing lists for me that take into account the following: Variety, At least one of everything (not including Forge World stuff - though FW suggestions are also welcome), and consider that I don't necessarily have to worry about costs. The other list would take the same things into account BUT would be a bit more spend-thrift (say at about 80% of the "money is no option list.")

These are the armies in question:

Space Wolves
Tau
Tyranid
Necron

For anyone who will take this challenge on, please be specific, not general (e.g. 2x Terminator Squads, 3x of this, etc...). THANK YOU very much for any advice and suggestions.

1. What exactly do you mean by "variety, at least one of everything." Its very ambiguous. You will need to go into more detail.

2. Also what points range are you aiming for? Basically, what size battles are you aiming at. The "tournament standard" is usually between 1500-1750/1850-2000 depending on where you are.

3. What kind of armies are you looking for? The most cut-throat competitive armylists? Or just a whatever randomly put together list.

4. Give us a solid budget. "Money is no problem" is fine, but without any other restrictions I'd probably throw you a million dollar shopping list for an apocalypse-size army. Also remember, models are not the only thing that you need to take into consideration.

Paints, brushes, glue, Modelling tools, transport, random bits and pieces for conversions, whatever.

For a 1.5k army including the above factors, I'd budget maybe $1,000.

-----

please answer the above questions.

1. I would like to have a variety of units that allow for different battle strategies - I don't want to focus only on one particular style of units that supports only one main way to fight. However, I'd like to buy at least one of every unit.

2. Let's see - Basically I want the ability to field huge, huge armies if needed.

3. Budget up to $2000 per army.

Hope that helps.

so... doesn't this basically cut out everything for you? Go to the GW website and buy one of everything. I don't get what you're asking here.

Ya before you just start buyng things at random you may want to actually sit down and write up a couple army lists and try to et a much better idea of what it is exactly you want. This is a game where simply having one of everything isn't really going to work. If you want to be a WAAC guy then do a little research and find the lists that spam the right units and go with that. If you just want to have fun then run the units that you like the looks of. Also try checking out the dakka swap shop. You may be able to find some real good deals for stuff for those armies, you may even be able to pick up large parts of those armies for cheap.

That's the problem, I most likely won't have the time to have analyzed and properly understood the Army lists and such by the time I can purchase these - thus my request for advice and help from folks more experienced than I.

I thought it was fairly clear - I'm totally new and as such will have the funds for the purchase before I have the knowledge to buy a good mix of things. I'm confused as to why this might be confusing?? :(

You want to have one of everything, but you want us to tell you what to buy..? If you want to have one of everything, buy one of everything, no need for the question.

If you want a good, cut-throat, game-winning armylist, then you're going to need to drop the "one of everything" clause. Good armies don't work that way.

If your really wanting one of everything at the very least pickup 2 battalion boxes and then one of everything not in the box. It will give you a place to start. At the $2000 mark are you looking for pro painted armies? You may want to start there and have them paint you up something nice.

My Armies: 8000 , 3000 , 8000 High Elf, 10000+ and goblin, 5000 Dwarf

You must spend the money when you get it? You can't hang on to it and spend after doing research? That way you'd avoid any potential regrets.

Space Marine mega force box set? Play with that and see what you like and don't like. Buy some bits and convert the dudes to look more Space Wolves esq (this is what I've done with my Dark Angels). If you have the AoBR set then you will also have a squad of termies that are easy to convert too and a 2nd dreadnaught.

Sigh. Since you seem to be missing what I'm asking about or at the very least confusing what I'm saying, I'll try one more time to be clear.

1. I'm not even remotely worried about having some "cutting edge" army.
2. I also like the idea of having a massive variety to choose from - even if I don't plan to have one of everything in my army. Just because I may want to buy one of everything, so to speak, doesn't mean I have to want to include them in an army list.
3. I'm asking for what multiples ABOVE having one of everything will allow me to be able to make fun armies down the road that could also be decent.

Hopefully this clarification will assist you in better understanding where I'm coming from.

Well it's not really a Brewster's Millions kind of thing, by any means (and I'm not going to have THAT much extra $$) but I've learned in the past that when you do have some excess that you could honestly spend on a "want" that you may not get the chance to do ever again, you sort of want to use it while it's there. So in that regard, I figured it couldn't hurt to ask the experts here (of which there should be many, I'd assume) what they might buy for each of these armies had they a LOT of extra $$. That's probably what I should have wrote for my subject line. Sigh.

Right, but what we like to play and enjoy doing may be completely different from what you enjoy.

I like assault based armies, so I'd get a bunch of assault marines, termies, razorbacks, and... other stuff to build a blood angels army. You might hate assault and prefer shooty armies.

If you don't care about having a good army, then literally just by "whats cool," because it won't matter anyway.

Columbus, Oh

Do you have to buy new? If not, check the Swap Shop here and also Bartertown, you can get a lot more for the buck from someone disenchanted with their current army.. and if you don't want to have to paint it yourself, picking up a pre-painted one might bit your need.

Personally, I'd get: (Heh, I already did get... :p )

Tyranids! They're very CC-oriented, but you can get some great shooting in if you like. You can run hordes, you can run small elite forces... Almost all Monstrous Creatures, or all small bugs. Plus, the model range is awesome and fun to paint.

A couple of Battleforce Boxes. 2 or 3, for sure. You likely will not use the Warriors (in certain builds, sometimes, but not often). The small bugs and Genestealers will make up the bulk of any horde list (and make great filler/extras in other lists).

9 Hive Guard. Or 6, but 9 is better.

Lictors: Best looking model out there, not so effective in combat but awesome regardless.

Deathleaper: Better Lictor, sweet model. Paint him.

Trygons/Mawlocs... Get one of each. Again, awesome model.

Carnifex is one to paint (nice model!) but not really use in the game... they keep dying and Trygons do the job better.

Hive Tyrant, one or two... Solid unit. Get 3 Tyrant Guard as well.

Zoanthropes will not have room in your list (see Hive Guard above) but are neat, get a few. I have 4, one can be used for the Doom of Malantai (he will die immediately, however).

Biovores are shockingly effective for me for some reason, but the models are ugly. YMMV.

Raveners are too much fun and great to paint as well. They're pretty dangerous on the board but don't deep strike them and expect them to live.

The Pyrovore is a fun model but less than spectacular on the board. I like fire, though... heavy flamers are great. Elites slots might be full of Hive Guard though.

Genestealers. Get a few more boxes on top of the battleforce as well. They're amazing. They kill things, and very effectively.

Consider purchasing a few Venomthropes (again, great model, nice looking. There's a theme here!). They give cover to things. It's a good thing.

Expensive business though! You've been warned. Cheers mate.

(Edit: Consider, for value: 2 or 3 of the new Marines Army Box... convert the Marines to your preferred army. Top it off with a few extra Predators... there's a good size force for a decent savings.)

Ive read every post in this thread and still can't understand what the heck the OP wants... Are you just asking for an Internet list that can "do it all" ? It doesn't exist.... Space wolves would be closest, but seriously , buy the codex, spend a few hours and read it and buy what seems interesting to you.

Total Finecast models purchased: 5
Total models without Finecast issues out of those purchased: 0
