Well, something came to my mind earlier when I was on another post about a really effective mech tau list, (I salute that Tau player, damn nasty. . . )  But what happens if your ethereal dies while your fire warriors are in the devilfish, are they basically immune to the ld check, or do they have to deploy outside and fall back if they fail the ld check?

Same issue different manifestation.

The rules do not tell us what to do. Discuss with your opponent/gaming group on how you would like to proceed.

Your options are essentially:

A) embarked models are immune to morale/Ld tests.
B) embarked models take morale/Ld tests normally, but if they fail you need to create house rules to allow them to fall back out of their vehicle.

Neither solution is supported by the rules but both solve the problem nicely depending on how you think the game should be played.

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?
yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!
