The green ones that GW still package with some of the kits are transparent green.

You can get several other colours in that thickness rod (also transparent) from Plastruct, I believe (I know they do blue and some other colours).

Yes, light CAN travel through them, but like light travels through fishing line, as opposed to light through fibre-optics.
