Im starting an IG army in a tale of four gamers type of campaign and i just wanted some tips for building my army

Start by buying 3 boxes of infantry and bitz ordering at least some melta guns (with perhaps some plasma as well). Then buy either 3 more boxes of infantry and a couple of commissars, or 3 chimeras (or vendettas) and bitz order some more plasma guns.

Here's a decent guide to each of the units available in the guard codex. Its also got a "What to buy" section at the bottom. =P

Do not under any circumstances buy the battleforce. It is crap.

I would suggest a Command Squad and 2-4 infantry squads (depending on your budget)

In addition to those, 1-2 Chimeras and maybe a basic Leman Russ.

You can also order plamsaguns/meltaguns from the GW store. Look from Bits: Weapons. (or just order from a bits store, might be easier to put together since no cutting or greenstuffing is required)
