I'm writing an article, and I don't do it all at once. I like to take my time. So, when I clicked preview I had to re-login. (The url had ?returnpath=Special:edit). But every time I clicked login, it just reloaded the page. So I was stuck on the login page.

So how did you get in?

I closed the tab, and went onto the login page without the ?returnpath in the url.

It is a security feature. There is a known glitch where a few bits of the articles section will redirect badly as you state, but the workaround is very complex unless I put in an ugly hack. It is uncommon enough that it is not worth the effort to fix but thanks for reporting.
