Subject: Part 1 & 2 Of Tyranids Vs Necron ( Scarab Farm) BattleReport
This was an interesting game to watch. It's too bad the Necrons got stomped so quickly. Better luck next time, sir I never knew Necron warriors could shoot over scarabs without granting a cover save but still get a cover save from enemy shooting.
Is this something new or has this always been around?

This is a basic concept of cover, either in game or in real life. Get close enough to something that is low enough to see over and you can get cover while not having your own LOS obscured.

What this clearly proves, is that Janthkin out-played me! I got well and truly stomped, but playing Janthkin is still a pleasure, even when he is beating your bottom!
Love the Dakkadakka dice tray/bowl/whatever. Brilliant advertising; turn it the right way up next time, though, eh?
Janthkin seems like a genuinely nice guy too; bless. I didn't realise how bad Reece's dice appeared to be in Janthkin's report actually. added further insult to injury for Reece I guess.

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now." - Magnus the Red, to a statue of Leman Russ

I didn't watch the video batrep, but Scarabs are Swarms, and swarms never provide a cover save (unless by TLOS - but if you're low enough to have scarabs deny TLOS there's some weird terrain).

No, Swarms never provide cover saves to monstrous creatures. Nothing prevents them from giving cover to normal infantry.

So unless there's some weird terrain, your shots would be going over the Scarabs, so they don't provide cover.
I was wrong about being because they're swarms, however.
Yes, but Scarabs are tall enough that you have to look through them at the feet of a unit of Warriors walking directly behind, which is enough to give them cover.

Ive always seen it played as "if shots from either player go through a friendly or enemy unit it provides a cover save", is this wrong?

We hashed this out in YMDCa while back; you might take a look at that thread, and see if it covers your question. Basically, the problem rests on the firing model's need to see ALL of the target model, while only checking from the eyes of the firing model.
