I'm leaning on hand weapons, because spears are going to be like 80 points total, and for Saruas Warriors... Idk

The Restrictions I Put On My Tallarn Lists:
- Missile Launchers are the only HW teams allowed in Infantry Squads.
- All units able to take the FW Desert Raider special rule, must take it in lists of 750 points or more.
- 1 unit of 10 Rough Riders is required for lists of 1000 points or more.
- 2 units of Mukaali Rough Riders are required for lists of 1000 points or more.
- No vehicles besides Chimera Armoured Transports and Hydra Flak Tank Batteries are allowed.
- Al'Rahem is required in lists of 1000 points or more.

Depends on the unit size for starters, below 24 Spears are definitely not worth it because you start losing the extra attacks you have paid for too quickly. In larger units I would say they are equally viable, you lose a little bit of survivability in combat for extra damage output so its really down to personal preference imo. A deciding factor could be your Slann's lore choice, Life can make single large units tougher, which works well with large Spear blocks, while Light can make multiple smaller Hand Weapon units hit harder.

If, for some reason you are playing big enough games, you are hording your saurus then spears could be useful.

As they are Str4, they still reduce armor so the spears arn't lacking in killing power, just durability.

If you run Life, Spears can be good because it makes them tougher/regrows losses from a poorer save.

I mean don't forget the cost too. (40-80 points is low but still...)

I have been kicking around the idea of working on my saurus, what would the consensus be on a unit of 40? Large enough to merit spears? Killy enough to not need them?

40k: 2000 - White Scars

That depends on the formation.

In horde formation they are getting a ton of attacks already so the extra 10(if no casualities are taken) attacks probably won't do much. You might want to save the points and just get more bodies for the unit.

If you are going for a Bus formation(5 or 6 wide) then the spears would increase your killing power dramatically.

Spears in a 5x5 formation for me always. works like a charm.

I run 2 30man blocks one of each, mostly because I enjoy having different models on the board. Both work equally well, one I run 5x6 and the other I run 6x5. Never found either to be better or worse really.

Cthuluspy, not to get picky but 24man groups means you should save 4 models over the course of loosing the whole unit. Do you find the Hw/sh keeps that unit alive that much longer?

Well, to be honest, I haven't had a chance to use them

The extra 6++ save should keep them alive for a bit longer anyway.

It's really not that great of an improvement i don't use spears because i don't feel like paying extra for an already expencive warrior, it also leaves me with more points to spend on other stuff.
