Yep. Lubrication is the key. The
GS will remain tacky for quite a while, even as it starts firming up, but the longer it goes, the easier it is to manage. Most folks just use water or saliva. Some prefer using Vaseline, but petroleum products require thorough washing after each
GS application has set up before the next layer can be applied.
Personally, I opt for the middle ground - a drop or two of water-based personal lubricant (KY or the like) added to a small container of water. The lube... well, it lubricates.

Better than plain old water could. It also keeps the stuff from evaporating quite as quickly. It does require cleanup where normal water wouldn't, but the residue comes away quite easily under the tap without the need for any soaps or degreasers. I consider that a worthwhile tradeoff, especially since I don't sculpt frequently.
