Subject: How a SM Chapter came to be?

Hey guys, I'm creating my own space marine chapter called The Brazen Fists (not very original, I know). They derive from the Imperial Fists. What I want to know is the process in which a new space marine chapter is founded. With the creation of a new chapter I assume there is elections for a chapter master, librarian, ect.. I googled it but couldn't find anything. Does anybody know this process or can point me to a site? Thanks.

I believe that only the high lord's of Terra can order the creation of a new chapter, and it is usually headed by experienced members of it's former chapter. Don't quote me on this, i am not sure.

The HLoT decree a founding, where a number of chapters are formed from various geneseed's stocked on Mars. The geneseed selected will be from any chapter, but will identified mainly by which primogenitor legion it was derived from. The chapter from which the genestock was used to found a new chapter will often be given the honour to start the chapter from their own ranks. This is usually done as a small detachment of marines that would be essential to a new chapter, namely a Captain, Librarian, Tech-marine, veterans, and veteran sergeants.
The Captain by default becomes Chapter Master until the chapter is fully formed, and is then given the option to carry on as Chapter Master or return to their parent chapter as a Captain. The Librarian is normally a senior one, as is the Tech-marine, who then become their respective leaders of the Librarium and Armory respectively. The veteran sergeants will often become Captains as the chapter grows and the remaining veterans will become sergeants of the new squads.
The detachment can vary in size between half a dozen to two dozen as most people suspect (no had fluff, just speculation and logic), and will include hundreds of servitors and serfs, as well as a small but well stocked armoury and stores and a few ships. As the chapter grows it requisitions more supplies from the Ad mech or be gifted ships/vehicles from the parent chapter.
Oh, and there's an Apothecary who becomes the head apothecary and is responsible for implanting the gene-seed in the new recruits until more apothecaries are pulled from the ranks.
Hope that helps. Check out the Bolter and Chainsword forums for more info on stuff like this.

Blacksails,
good write up, I had a hard time finding this info myself...
for my DIY fluff, Calgar and other Chapter Masters petitioned the HLoT to create my Orion's Fists chapter. I am working on the Fiction right now and it should be up soon, maybe tonight in a rough draft.
Good luck to the OP!

I will say this much about that though; Space Marines don't petition the HLoT. They are unequivocally the most important individuals in the Imperium of Man. The HLoT decree a founding when they deem it necessary to create more marines for a wide variety of purposes. Specifically, individual chapters are never created on their own, separate from another founding, nor are they founded because a couple chapter masters want to create some kind of pet chapter.
Its honestly easier and makes your fluff more original and fleshed out to have your chapter completely independent of pre-fluffed chapters. Don't piggy-back on other marine characters or chapters, make your own fluff that is unique and different. Calgar and the likes should have no bearing on your fluff, even if they are an Ultramarine decedent.
Just my thoughts on the matter.

The DA petitioned the HLoT to create a chapter in order to guard a specific region of space.
The petition was successful.
Though that is the only recorded case of an SM chapter petitioning for the creation of a new chapter and considering the nature of DA chapters... well needless to say they probably had an agenda.
