So have you ever wanted that uber unit and discovered that to get it you'd have to spend some absurd amount of cash?
Well I've always wanted a full royal court and I heard the idea of tinkering around with a triarch/immortal kit bash; but then I made up my mind and decided to actually give it a go.

The following blog is about my attempts to create a full 10 man royal court using as little green stuff as possible and making them look somewhat unique while I do it.

More to come after I begin my journey this evening...

Alrighty so I've begun my journey and decided to start with the easy part; the lords. Now I just happened to own an old staff of light lord so I used him as a reference point for the new lords. One thing that I immediately considered was how meager he looked, hes barely larger than a warrior (if larger at all) and his staff is so teeny tiny that its hardly intimidating at all. So my goal was to make them bigger, and perhaps a little more fierce looking than the old lord. So basically I made the decision to more or less use the lichguard base (torso and legs) but I wanted to add a little ferocity to the warscythes and make them a little more unique without going over the top.
Now its important to note that I really dislike the decision to make necrons more tomb kingy than they were and so left a lot of the lichguard parts off (like the crotch guard, they have no private parts anymore after all so they wont be needing em). It's also important to note that I was planning to use the staves of light and convert them into the cryptek weapons only to learn that they only come with 1 staff with two different choices of heads (scythe or light). So I'll have to do some improvisation later with the cryptek weapons.

So for the scythes I merely cut the bayonet off the immortals tesla carbines and did a little gluing. I liked the result so I repeated it for all 5.

Also, please for the love of god when you're putting together the arms and the scythes pay very close attention to which arms go to which staff, it'll save you a lot of heartache and guesswork lol. So here are the fruits of my labor thus far.

So the two in the background are basic lords with scythes, I decided to go with the praetorian heads because like I said earlier I wanted to shy away from the tomb kingy and keep the feel of the old lord (which has no head flair) the praetorian heads also had a small "jewel" on the forehead which was close to the symbol the old lord had on his head. The model in the forefront is what I plan to use for obyron (because I'm going to use the old lord with res orb as one of the court lords so technically I had an extra), who I gave the non-burger kingy crown. I did give him the crotch-guard as the other character HQ's have them and it would help further distinguish him from the basic lords.

Shown above (sorry its so dark) is a size comparison between the lichguard model lords I've "converted" and the old lord. I also took the opportunity to make the old lords' staff more sexy. Now the lords are pretty much done except for the capes I'm going to make them out of green stuff (any suggestions there?).

After mostly completing the lords I then began to ponder the crypteks. I've used the lichguard torsos and I'm not going to use the long corded immortal torsos so that left me with two options the deathmark torso or the praetorian torso as shown below.

Once again sorry its so dark. So neither of the torsos really matched the layered exoskeletal feel that an actual cryptek model has, but they both had the technological aspect which I liked. I decided to go with the praetorian one originally though and then I ran into my second problem with the kit bashing as shown below...

They dont fit! There are two little bumps on the front portion of the immortal torsos which prevent it from going in the praetorian backs. So I will try to carve one out but for now I decided to do a test with the deathmark back to see how it looked.

At this point I had to come up with a weapon idea. I looked at what I had available to me and thought, "hey that sniper is kinda long". And so it was that I began cutting one to pieces to make it more staff-like. I also took the staff of light head pieces to use for the heads of the "Sniper staff". I didnt like the way the hands were positioned on the sniper though so used the long arm holding the tesla carbine cutting it off right at the hand. I also cut a corresponding chunk into the "sniper staff" to fit the hand segment of the tesla carbine arm at a place I felt where it looked natural.
It's a long way from complete but here's a preview of the results.

Overall I like how it turned out. It is a little bulky but I like to think that its full of capacitors and such that would power something like a tremor or eldritch staff!

Hope you've enjoyed what I've done so far.

More or less yes...Great, we've gone from cheap resin substitutes to weapons banned by the geneva convention...

Lol alrighty so here's another update for you guys! Let's start with the warriors' cloaks

Obviously I'm no pro with green stuff but I'm hoping that with a little carving and some detailing with a hobbyknife they'll turn out pretty well. The models themselves though are done.

Here I just wanted to show you my "obyron" model next to my imotekh and "nemesor zandrekh" model (p.s. I hate finecast with a passion! It snaps like a twig and then when you try to glue it its all like, "Ha! Your insta-cure glue has no effect on me!", really bad stuff I'd rather have a little less detail and something I can actually glue together). And yes obyron is pointing at YOU!!

This is my seismic crucible cryptek, I just butchered one of the lichguard shields.

And one of my basic eldritch staff guys.

And just to show you how dynamic you can make their poses.

So all in all I had a ton of fun making this and while I could have made this sooooo much more detailed, I'm honestly not that skilled! But I achieved my results, I made a tabletop functional complete royal court for only $66! Add it to the models I already had and you have a nasty 1400 or so point deathsquad that can hop around the field, shoot a ton of str 9 shots at 36" (yay tankhunters!), or have a ton of str 8 warscythes if they charge (yay furious charge!).

So yes, if you wanted to spend more time you could make these so much more detailed but for me this works perfectly fine! Can't wait to use them in battle! Thanks so much for reading!

Thanks for sharing. This is a great example of how to minimize the costs and how to maximize the outcome.

For the finecast, if you put a resin model in hot water it will soften, and you can bend the resin into the shape you want.
ALWAYS soak it in hot water as soon as you get it out and leave it in until it is soft... trust me you wont be snapping anymore resin models in the future!

Anyways, really well done bud you have persuaded me to do this instead of getting the models separately!

So I finally got around to priming them and it just makes them look so much better! I changed the settings on my camera too to get some better pictures for you! Here they are!

Now to work on painting them. I havent painted anything in my army yet but basically what I'm using is this giant hq unit, 3 monoliths and 4 squads of 10 warriors. It's an interesting list for sure, hopefully it will win me a few games but I designed it around smacking grey knights players and other elite armies like demons around. But basically the main color is metallic brown, with silver in the joints and a metallic blue for accents. I'll post some pics of that later when I'm done!

If I read it correctly.. you have one unit that costs almost as much as a baneblade?
isn't that very risky? I mean.. str10 ap1 vindicator blasts are your death.. i think isn't that way overprised pointswise? It sounds good "full royal court" get them painted and tell us how they fared in battle.. If you were living in Belgium would challenge your force for a battle as my SM have a burning hate against necrons.. a ton of lost battles against them as nothing to do with it.. too bad you live in the USA bro

get your army painted.. seriously necrons are the easiest army to paint.. you shouldn't wait

Looking good!

Definitely much better than buying the proper finecast versions and having to bludgeon them into shape.

Yea I'll post some more pics when I've hammered out my paint scheme. Well in total the royal court including the 3 special characters comes out to 1295 pts. This is a large chunk of points I agree but I feel it has so much more versatility than something similar like a draigowing. I mean you can deepstrike all over the table as long as obyron is still alive, or, you can simply pop out of a monolith for the less risky move. You have the cover of night fighting so as not to be shot the first couple of turns with anything big like broadsides, you have 3x 2+ saves, 8x 3++ saves, and 1 of these is rerollable during the enemy shooting phase via the eternity cryptek and then if you do happen to lose a unit they have a 50% chance of coming back the next turn (which if you didnt reroll a save you could choose to reroll instead). Also the special characters dont instantly die from missiles like paladins and the like do (true toughness 5), and if they get you into assault with a blob unit like scarabs or ork boyz you can literally just teleport out of there! I'll let you know how it goes though

unfortunately a vindicator will take them out...

For my royal court, I'll be using warrior bodies/plasticard/greenstuff and deathmark heads for cryptecs, and just normal lychguard for lords ( with their paintscheme standing them apart from normal lychguard)

You can not teleport out of combat anymore. Take another look at your codex before relying on that. Nice conversions.
