I have recently began re-playing Warhammer 40k and I am currently collecting Imperial Guard. I only have a small army at the moment, but I was wondering the god and bad aspects of collecting Imperial Guard (Note: Please only discuss the rules and tactics about them and not painting, thanks

IG are0 generally considered one of the most powerful codexes (codi?), with cheap troops, powerful tanks etc. One of the few weaknesses I can think of is that to collect they're phenomenally expensive. A squad of 10 (50-60pts) costs £20. Tanks are about £40, so many just spam Vendetta gunships and veteran melta spam, as opposed to hordes etc. Gets really boring after a while.

With an Imperial Gaud army your looking at the possiblity of fiedling either more troops, special/heavy weapons or tanks than your opponent in any given game. The basic Leman Russ can pop holes in most other tank and infantry formations without too much effort, and can take a good deal of damage before it goes down. The Imperial Guard is a great army if you want to specialise for a specific tactic-want to send waves and waves of troops at your enemy? Take Chenkov and a few platoons of concripts with commissars, every time one's wiped out it comes back onto the table from reserves. Or you could go for sticking your troops all in Chimeras and skirt around the table chucking out plasma death from your APCs whilst your heavy weaponary sits back and mops up the rest. They can cost a lot of money if you exclusively buy from Games Workshop, but there's always Ebay, or you could go for another company's line which are generally much cheaper, and usually of the same standard. =P

As discussed above, the cost of making an IG army is up there. However, between my two main armies, I prefer the IG over the SMs any day.

Good thing about IG: Tanks, you can field alot of them at 2000 points. (Currently, I run two LRBT, a demolisher, hydra, 4 chimeras, and three armoured sentinels).

Down Side: To take alot of tanks, such as LRBT, you have to start to squadron them. Squadron rules realy hurt as much as they help.

Good thing: Infantry has the ability to take alot of shot. First rank fire, sencond rank fire with a blob squad can do alot of damage.

Downside: strength 3 AP- does not do a whole lot

Elites: They are each cool in their own way, but, usualy over costed, money and points.

Just a few things.

Have fun with your army, make it your own. Or, you can find numerous lists that show CCS with four plasma in a chimera and then a whole bunch of valk/vendetta spam and such. Make a unique IG army, It will work once you get use to playing it and getting the orders rules down (if you go the big infantry route).

IG are the most versatile army in the game. Can give yourself a horde of expendable cannon fodder, a small force of elite shock infantry, a tide of armor, a wall of artillery and firepower, or a mixture of all of the aforementioned.

Downside: lolwut expensive.

My Armies:
5,500pts
2,700pts
2,000pts

My first army was SM, gave them away and started IG on a whim. Can't complain about any aspect of their army aside from the STUPIDLY over-priced Ogryns.

I run a mechvet setup with plasmas or meltaguns and I can stay on par with a MEQ about 80% of the time...providing my rolling isn't crap. The IG armor is probably the most versatile in the game and for the points cost (sometimes) can be a real steal.

Pick a way you want to run the army, mechanized infantry, footsloggers, armored fist. Something that YOU want to have fun with, if that's your goal. If you're looking at competitive...there are quite a few lists here on Dakka that are built for tourney play.
