I am switching from 40k to Lotr
and i dont understand combat seeing who wins?
At the start of the fight Phase it tells you how to balance a fight beteween people with the same fight value but, I dont get it between others.. like would it be the same between a nazgul and a rohan warrior? just roll and see who gets higher??
Please explain how figuring out who wins?
Thanks, Papa

Right there are several things to consider while fighting. Each person has an attack (A) This shows how many dice you can roll for this specific model. You then roll your dice to see who wins the fight. (the highest dice wins but it's easier for hero's to win since they have usually more than 1 attack increasing their chances etc etc) With hero's there are some special rules for example might but we'll keep it simple at the moment. So now e.g. you have won the battle - you now role to wound. (you know how to wound right?)
example: Faramir has 2 attacks and therefore roles 2 dice getting a 5 and 2. The Uruk roles 1 dice and gets a 4. Faramir wins meaning the uruk backs of 2cm to show he's losing and now Faramir roles to wound. That's it!

As I understand it, fight values come into play when you tie on the dice rolls. Higher fight wins the tie. I've only played LotR a couple of times though, so I could be wrong.

That's exactly it. To continue with the above example, if Faramir were to roll a 5 and a 2, and the Uruk rolls a 5, the fight is tied. You then compare fight values. Faramir has a 5 Fight, the Uruk has 4. So Faramir wins the fight, the Uruk is moved back 2", and Faramir rolls to wound.

And to clarify with a second example, if the uruk was fighting a dwarf (with the same fight value) and they both rolled a 4, roll a D6 and on a 4+ the good player (the dwarf) wins the fight, otherwise the uruk wins

I'm new to the game too. Is that really how you do combat? I thought you were adding the fight values to the die rolls to find the winners. Just a straight-up roll-off seems simplistic.
Could someone perhaps answer another question for me? If a spearman helps another soldier win a combat, will both of them get to strike at (roll a die to wound) the enemy?
Thanks.

yes that's right, if the both role the same and have the same fight value you agree on 1,2,3 you win or 4,5,6 they win - or visa verse

yep there's not much to it, but the game is quite strategical as you can control each unit unlike WOTR. For your second question, if your backed up with a spear yes he can role to wound too.

I just found this as I was rereading the rules and, actually, the spearman doesn't get to roll to wound if the fight is won. The spearman gives the warrior he's supporting an extra attack, which would mean that the warrior actually in melee would roll to wound twice (or more)...making spearmen supporting a hero awesome.
