So this morning I was watching animal planet, waiting for the dog whisperer to be over so I could switch back to nat geo wild. Anyways, some show about freaky animals came on, and it had a showing of "twisty cats".

http://www.karmafarms.com/twisty.htm

Edit - looks like animal planet did the story wrong.

Reminds me a lot of what the AKC has done to breeds like the Bulldog.

Yea it doesnt sound like she purposely does things to them to get them that way? Its a genetic mishap. At least thats how I took it from reading the link. Did I miss something? Is it because I just recently woke up and am a bit foggy?

Basically instead of spaying the animal with the defect she gathers them up and breeds them, producing defect kittens.

Now most of what I know is coming from the animal planet show. If that link goes somewhere else then I'm not sure. Lady might have decided to change things and updated the sight accordingly.

You didnt read your own link then? Because that wasnt what the link said, infact, it states that animal planet "Got a few things wrong on their show"

Using a phone, and the only links besides that one were people screaming animal cruelty. Tried to find the most balanced article on google. Skimmed it and posted it.

So animal planet made the situation out to be worse then it was? That's interesting. I'll read more into later.

Probably should, it really could just be her making the situation less then it actually is, I dunno its her website. But according to her, animal planet got it wrong and that ignited a big controversy. Not surprising really, if she is telling the truth, because most people "know" what they "know" from watching TV and or movies......which is terrifying

She may have only bred them like that, but that still doesn't change the fact that the poor critters can't run, hunt, jump, use their front paw properly, walk properly and have to rely on someone to give them food.

Having gone through the article, yeah I can sorta see what happened if the Karma farms story is legit. Deformed cats make a better story if the listener is told about them being bred to look that way, and thus it got twisted. Still, the following kind of stuck out to me.

It is true that we wanted kittens like Flipper when we bred her and did hope that there would be a breed like Flip one day. But we found that the Twisty gene rarely produced one like Flip and can cause more twisting and abbreviation than we wanted.

I imagine it's a good thing that didn't work. They'd be getting more hate mail than they currently do with that TV show still airing.

Which is sad, but is still better than simply being killed at birth.

You misunderstand me, I am not advocating killing them at birth; that would be atrocious.

I am just saying that people shouldn't breed disadvantageous deformities, just because they think it looks nice.
