I was just curious does anyone know if there is a Paint Can of Chaos Black available that is exactly what GW uses, but just without the GW label? GW paint is too expensive, but I like how the GW paint "behaves" when I spray it. Thanks!

Edit:

I know Chaos Black isn't a primer. I just need a spray can that's the exact same paint in a different bottle if it exists. At the moment I'm thinking that GW Chaos Black is essentially Krylon Flat Black? Am I wrong? Thanks!

It used to be Krylon Flat Black, but I believe they changed suppliers a few years back.

Halfords black primer, or better grey primer, anything from Monster which is good. There are a lot of good ones on the market.

Don't think it's GW's formula, but Duplicolor auto primer works great, even on unwashed resin (yep, tried it) - it's identical to Formula P3 and runs about $8 USD a can. Nice fan-shaped spray pattern, too, so better contol and less waste.

Any matt black primer will do a better job than GW chaos black paint. It's not a primer as such although some use it as such.

I always see Yanks posting about Krylon that they get from Walwart for a few bucks.

This.

It's the same price as GW's (last time I checked) but you get loads more and it adheres really well. Halford's stuff is the way forward!

I'm not really looking for something that's better...my problem is that I do Black using GW Chaos Black and it gives a really nice surface for the Tamiya Spray cans to adhere to. I was hoping to duplicate the same surface with another paint, but at this point its looking like the closest thing is Krylon Matte Black. I'm going to give it a shot and see how it turns out.

Krylon does a good primer, just make sure you do the PRIMER first.

PAINT is NOT PRIMER

Get yourself a Krylon primer of whatever color (grey or black, it doesn't matter), then grab your spray can of flat or satin black (I use Krylon for everything, so I whip out my black Krylon spraypaint- see aforementioned link)

Now you've got a nice, black mini ready to splatter with artistic talent... or splatter like a 4 year old with fingerpaints, whichever you prefer....

Edit: Not 2 seconds after the post, i forgot to mention: Rustoleum is a good primer-paint as well. Just remember, as with all spray cans, you gotta find the sweet spot for the perfect coverage. Keep your hand moving, overlap sprays, keep a good distance, watch the weather for barometer and humidity and etc, ya know?

Good luck

GW does not make or sell a primer spray. They sell paint. I'm tired of explaining this every week.

I already know that GW Chaos Black isn't primer. I just typed it in anways out of habit..

What I'm looking for is something that imitates GW's Chaos Black exactly. It gives the best texture in my opinion for what I do with my tanks since I spray red on top of them afterwards with Tamiya. I've tried Rustoleum since I had some around the house and the can was far from what I want. The red that I sprayed on top of the Rustoleum was completely different in texture and look than what I've done before. It was just a waste of paint imo.

I'm hoping that Krylon Flat Black is GW Chaos Black with a different label.

I'll second that. It doesn't go on as thick as GW paint though so you might have to do more passes to get a model covered completely.

As for what the OP is asking, I guess the safest thing to do would be to keep buying GW paint then, since trying to figure out what paint they've re-branded is likely going to be expensive and frustrating.

I've used Army Painter Black Primer recently, and to be honest i don't know what to think of it. It's very like GW Chaos Black, it comes out as much finer more dispersed spray, where as Chaos black used to come out like a blast with the slightest pressure.

I must admit I like the so called colour Primers from Army Painter, I like the fact I am cutting steps out of the painting process getting a nice even flat base colour. Then a quick drybrush with lighter tones, then an extremely light drybrush, then some detailing, then a wash to bring it together and a final super detail, and varnish. Done, i've cut out the priming black/grey/white and saved money, no change to quality of output.

Wal Marts Color Place paints work fine and cost a whopping $1.

The brand of paint is far less important than the technique in applying it.

As for texture, I'm not sure I want a paint to be texturing my models.
