Hey guys, I'm going to beef up my SM army to 1500pts very soon. I'm thinking of including Lysander but I've heard you shouldn't include special charaters when the army list is low in points. Would you guys consider 1500pts too low for Lysander or any other character for that matter?

HIDING IN METAL BAWKSES!

When have you heard that you should not include SC's at low points?

For some characters, 1500 would be too low. Lysander is fairly expensive for one guy and putting him with 5 Termies alone is 400 points, and when you add in a LR, you get to about half your army's cost.

I usualy only move into special characters at the 1750-2000 range. I found that any lower, that if/when he took a krak missile to the face, I lost alot of my points without him really doing anything

Sometimes you just don't have enough points to take a special character and have a viable list. But there is no blanket rule to not take SCs at low points, sometimes it is a good idea.

It totally depends on what it's bringing to the table. Some special characters can struggle in 2000+ point games whereas some excel.

Eg, Eldrad. he is mandatory in any 1500pt+ Eldar army in my opinion just due to the number of buffs he can throw out.

On the flip side, some characters such as the Swarmlord, who have trouble hiding, only exist to batter the enemy senseless and at 2000pts. They can be easily countered just due to the sheer amount of stuff that can bring them down.

So really, it depends on What the character is bringing to the table, How abundant it's counters are and what your intentions are for him.

4th edition rules had it so you needed to be playing a game of at least 1500pts to include a special character (750pts for the weaker ones, and 2000pts for the strongers ones too). I'd stay away from them till your playing larger games when your running out of things to spend points on or are looking for some fun (*broken) units to play with. ^^

****! their above us!

1500 is the minimum imo for a special charecter games unless they're cheap or your army relies on them

Except 5th edition no longer has these rules, and is (purportedly) balanced around SC's. While some are very powerful, there are always drawbacks involved. Lysander at less than 2000 points is probably not the best idea, but someone like Telion can fit in at most point levels. While a Swarmlord may require significant support, the doom of malan'tai or the gargoyle HQ guy could fit just fine in lower point games. It all depends on the SC in question.

Lysander is a wrecking ball, but he doesn't bring much to your army that an assault Terminator squad couldn't at that point level. If your army was built around a special character - Sternguard with Pedro, lots of melta/flamer with Vulkan, or what have you, then I'd say go for it at that point level. At 1500 points you're going to need to open up some room so you can buy some of the elite Space Marine units, since they're what really carries the army.

Depends totally on how many points they are and what they do.
At 65 points, Marbo is fun from 750+ up as one-man suicide squad.
Lord Castellon Creed + Colour Sargent Kell, however, at 175 points for 4 orders at 24" range, would only be worth taking at 2000+

Ok guys, I guess I'll wait for Lysander. The cinematic scene of Lysander deepstriking with a termie squad and blasting somethin' to bits seemed so cool, especially if i hook my sgts up with teleport homers. Alright guys, thanks for the advice.
