We feel safe in saying this is probably the weirdest story you’ll read all day…

An anti-gay Alabama Republican was reportedly making secret sperm donations to at least nine New Zealand women he met over the internet, unbeknownst to his wife back in America.

Bill Johnson, who made a failed bid for governor of Alabama in 2010, anonymously donated sperm to lesbian couples in New Zealand, according to a report by the New Zealand Herald.

Johnson has spent much of the last year in Christchurch, where he moved without his wife and her three kids (from a previous marriage), in order to help the country’s recovery from the February earthquake.

All the while Johnson was reportedly trolling the internet under the username “chchbill” for women who needed help getting pregnant. He reportedly had exchanges with at least nine women — among them several lesbians — at least three of whom are now pregnant.

From the Herald:

The Herald on Sunday approached Johnson on Thursday at a restaurant in Christchurch where he had just finished dining with one of the women he had successfully impregnated.

He said the urge to become a biological father was “a need that I have”.

“I am married to the most beautiful woman in the world. When I married her I knew we couldn’t have any more children. She had a hysterectomy 10 years ago,” he said. “There is nothing my wife would want to give me more in the world than a child of my own.”

“Reproduction and having children is as basic a human need as eating,” he told the Herald.

His wife, Kathy Johnson, said the revelations were “the utmost of betrayal.”

“This is a really, really difficult time for our family,” Kathy Johnson said in an email to the Mobile Press-Register. “I’m still in disbelief and very hurt, and our family has a lot of healing to do.”

Johnson ran as a Christian conservative in his 2010 bid for governor, during which he said he was against gay marriage. He finished fifth out of seven Republican primary candidates.

The term "lesbian" would indicate the former, as otherwise it'd be bisexual couples, or he would have raped them (in which case he deserves to burn in the fires of hell).

Lesbians can still have normal intercourse, they would just not get the same enjoyment out of it, much like gay men can have sex with women. You don't have to be straight or bi, it is just those two groups would engage in sex for reasons other than getting pregnant, whereas a lesbian probably would not.

Looking at the article it does indicate that hetro sexual females were involved as well.

Both methods of donation should still leave scope for wife to chop his balls off. He had better stay in NZ for a while.

Why donate to lesbians? Either so his super straight sperm can give the kid a fighting chance against the gay they'll inherit from their mother or girl on girl is hot. Maybe both.

If the woman involved was just participating for procreation purposes (and avoiding all of the costs involved with in-vitro), that doesn't make her a bisexual. And, as long as she agreed to this, it wouldn't be rape.

Either way, this story is not news. A minor political figure (he doesn't even have a Wikipedia page I can find) decided to try and have children with women who were completely willing. Sure, not telling his wife was strange, but that doesn't make it news.

Well this is certainly a twist on the regular story of anti-gay politicians and preachers getting caught having gay sex.

Nor is it news when a nobody gets caught having sex with rent boy in a public toilet, and not really more so when a minor political figure manages it. But when that minor political figure is known for his anti-gay position, it becomes news.

No, not all politicians are idiots. Many of them are, but it's important to point out, mock, and marginalize the particularly stupid, dishonest, and hypocritical ones. If we pay attention to this stuff, even just to the extent of being able to vote for the lesser of two evils, we can help avoid getting ourselves in even worse crap. In 2000, George Bush and Al Gore didn't look all that different. A lot of centrists and some business-friendly Liberals thought Bush might be a better choice, and voted for him. If we just write it off with "all politicians are idiots", like there's no distinction between the best and the worst, we deserve it when we get a guy like Bush.
