What point level? Have they played their own new necrons yet?
If brand new expect night fight. There are many viable ways to run necrons these days. It is hard to say which he will bring or what kind of tactics he may use without knowing your opponent better. Bring a well balanced list and target priority will be key.
Scarabs - somewhat scary but they are really just going to draw your fire and tarpit you.
Warriors - can be brought in squads up to 20 with a phaeron overlod who makes them relentless so 20 24" shots that can rapid fire if you get within 12".
Immortals - tesla can move and shoot at 24", 6's on hit grant 2 additional hits.
Annihilation arks - cheap and come with 4 str 7 hits for 90 points. Lots of love for these coming from players.

Wraiths are pretty nasty too. Fast moving, 2 wounds with 3+ invulnerable saves, str 6 rending.
And yea, Telsa Immortals are NASTY. in the few times I've fought them, they generally get more wounds than they had shots to begin with... that telsa rule is brutal.
newcrons are very powerful.

Are you hoping to slaughter him and laugh at his attempt to play the new Necron Codex? No? Then treat it like the learning experience it is. The best advice I ever got was that if I didn't know what to do, play like an Ork. Learn what does and what does not work. And give him a chance to try out his new toys.

I don't write the rules. My ego just lives and dies by them one model at a time. |

Necrons have a good few toys but they need them.
Play like an ork.
Also you should try to wipe whole squads in a go to ensure they do not come back.
Apart from this I would worry somewhat about mindshackle scarabs.

Does he have ghost arks? If so do not waste shots on warriors unless you kill them all.
(Shoot and kill 19 out of 20. Res orb 9 or 10 stand back up. 3 Ghost arks recover average of 6 warriors. Congradulations you permanently killed 2 warriors!!!)
