The rule states:
"When a Deathmark unit deploys, choose a non-vehicle enemy unit ON THE BATTLEFIELD (even a unit in a transport) to be their prey - place a counter next to the chosen unit to serve as a reminder..."
Reading the abyssal staff combo in another thread made me think - what if you are playing dawn of war and all there is available is an hq unit + 2 troops... or sometimes nothing at all - OR - if you are forced to deploy first and there are no enemy units on the battlefield - is this ability basically voided then?
I guess if it is, since you can't use the deep strike / ethereal interception ability w/ the cryptek , you would have to put them on walking on the board reserves..
Thoughts on this issue?

Ah, but they can deepstike on as soon as your opponent brings something in from reserves, even though its HIS turn, then maybe attach a crytek from another unit, is that allowed?

Nope, Crypteks aren't ICs and are attached at the beginning of the game.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

1) If you deploy first then the ability is voided, so put them in reserves
2) If there is nothing on the board when they turn up, the abiliy is voided - see 1

Based on the rules for 'Deployment' as defined in the core rules (for missions/deployment/objectives), as soon as Deathmarks are deployed (whether it is on the table OR in reserve) you may choose an enemy non-vehicle unit to "mark" as long as there is one on the table to choose. Based on the rules for 'Deep Strike' in the core rule book, you may ALSO choose an enemy non-vehicle unit to "mark" when the Deathmarks are "deployed" from reserve. Technically, a unit of Deathmarks COULD choose two separate units to "mark"...which is another bonus from taking Imotekh; his 4+ to seize means you could choose to go second and have a 50/50 shot of going first, while being able to "mark" two non-vehicle units per unit of Deathmarks.

Incorrect. The rules for Reserves states you are place in reserves INSTEAD of deploying.
