Ok I understand different wargear allocation but here is a scenario that came up last night.
There are 2 obliterators (same wargear, 2 wound models, one of them has 1 wound on him already from last turn)
I fire and wound with a melta and a bolt gun. He misses armor/invulnerable saves. Are both oblits dead because melta instant death and bolter causes second wound to second one? Or is one Oblit alive with 1 wound because he can allocate the melta wound on the model with 1 wound already and take the bolter wound on the fresh model?

P26. Both would be dead.
You have to ID the unwounded first.

As above.
WITHIN the wound group Instant Death MUST be applied to unwounded models first

+2 Points for good form sir.
And to OP, yes the ID wound MUST kill an unwounded model first to prevent the exact scenario you are questioning.
