Hello!
Might change the title of this, if someone can come up with a more fitting one.
Time is growing near to the point of unbearable at my eork, and I've begun contemplating a career change(again. Yes, I'm a 28 year ol who don't know what he wants to do when he grows up).
I got thinking this afternoon, about in what fields my hard earned skills as a hobbyist might actually be useful.
And I drew blank. Which is kinda odd, considering how much cool stuff We're capable of doing.
For instance, I can make a scale 1:48 sized officers cap with some greenstuff and time.
I can spend swathes of time memorizing rules or fluff text, yet Im incapable of multiplication of more than single digits without a calculator.
I've worked as alot of stuff, including the army, cnc operator (building parts for amongst other things, airplane engines), cnc programmer, truck driver, working with youths through social services, studied 3.5 years out of the 4.5 years to become a teacher, and lastly working for the city mission with addicts, homeless and the psychicly ill at a shelter.
I've had very little use of my hobby skills (some, but not much).
Do you have any suggestions for fields where our skills as hobbyists migght be useful?
What are your experiences?
/calle

Don't know about jobs but I find that my various tools are pretty useful around the house (student house, so no-one else has anything). Plus I've been able to jury-rig various bits of gadgetry (laptop lids, games consoles etc) using the bits I have laying around.

I suppose the surprise can be spoiled, but still, nobody is paying for the surprise.
Like any responsible adult I have a Five Year Plan. It culminates in me becoming Batman.

Short of the obvious ones that are game company and games store related i would suggest;
Architectural modelling
Theatrical/movie scenery, design, effects etc Automatically Appended Next Post: But then of you scale it up the are many skills that might have similarity as well, particularly custom/bespoke work. So may be car/boat body work might have a vaguely similar skill set on a basic level for example.

Electronic component manufacturing or installation Quality Assuarance. Requires and eye for detail, a good memory and the ability and silliness to follow The Book. Something a lot of gamers have in spades.

I got the job I do because of gaming. My reference told them that I've memorised 8+ RP and wargaming systems enough to be the local rules lawer (second place actually, Tristan... wow that guy's good ) have an eye for detail, can plan ahead and work well with others. All because of gaming. They hired me the next day. I work as a helpdesk technician.
So while our modeling skills are a bit niche, the rest of it can help out dramaticially.
