Warning From Magnus? Not Listening!

New Jersey, USA

Hi everyone,

Been playing Neverwinter Nights 2, and it's expansions recently, and have come across a technical problem. When the game reaches a certain point, Windows tells me that the program"NW2 has stopped working". It runs a quick scan for a solution, comes up with nothing, and then tells me that it'll notify me when it comes up with something.

I've tried reinstalling the game, and have kept the software updated, and can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong.

If anyone here has played the game and experienced these problems, please tell me how you went about fixing them.

Thanks!

Not sure if that's really going to be helpful. What's the 'certain' point and is it giving you an crash report or any such?

In the original NWN2 game, it's the part where you enter the "Sunken Flagon" for the first time. After talking to Duncan, and updating your Journal to get the quest for getting around Neverwinter, as I try to leave the building, that's when game crashes.

In NWN2: Storm of Zehir, it's happening right at the beginning of the graveyard you're meant to clear of undead, by Port Llast. The funny thing with this crash is that, I'm playing the quest a second time with a new party, and only with the new party did it crash. When I tried it the first time around, it went fine.

In the link you sent, the OP's problem is exactly what I'm experiencing. As for the responses they got, it seems that the problem doesn't have a single set solution. I could try reducing the resolution, but I doubt it'll work since all of my hardware is relatively new (built within the past 3 years). Unless my tech is TOO advanced for it (which hopefully isn't the case), I can't think of another reason why this is happening.

Thanks for the link, btw. Glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem.

Hmm. may indeed be driver related then. Did you run your dxdiag and try to update your drivers?

Sorry, but I'm not the most computer literate. Would you mind explaining how I could do that?

Much appreciated!

Go to start > run > DXdiag

Also, go to the manufacturer's website for your video card and look to see if there are downloadable drivers that are newer.

Update:

I ran the DXdiag like you suggested, and when it finished, I saw that there were no problems with any of the following:

Display
Sound 1
Sound 2
Sound 3
Sound 4
Input

If there's more information I can provide that would help with trouble shooting this, please let me know.

I've also tried running the game again, and it still crashes at the same point. :(

So would I run the diag for them in the same way I did for the dxdrivers?

Nope, next you find out the make and model of your video card and then go to the website of the manufacturer.

There you download the drivers for your card and install them on your machine.

Crossing your fingers and/or toes could help, but isn't necessary.

Another idea would be to go to multiplayer, look up one of the most popular NWN2 servers that are still running, and post on their forums.

I had to do this a few times when I went back to play nwn1

Updating drivers isn't always the best solution for things like this, sometimes you actually need to go to an older version of the driver (had this issue with my work computer, video drivers, and adobe acrobat of all things. Went back to 2-3 month old driver and had no problems).

Update every driver you can then make windows search for updates again and triple check EVERYTHING is installed.

If you have a pirated system the lack of windows updates may cause driver compatibility issues as I recently found out...

Are you running the Steam version of the game? Because if not, a (usually) simple fix is to run the program in compatibility mode - a lot of older programs have issues with new operating systems, and newer Windows OSes can run it in an older version of Windows. It usually fixes the problem.

If you're using the Steam version, however, it might not work. Steam tends to have its own way of running things, and it gives you an error message if you try to run its games in compatibility.

Sorry for the lack of response, everyone. The holiday season had caught up to me, and I wasn't free for much gaming, let alone trying to fix my gaming problems...

I still haven't updated the video drivers yet, but will post an update of what I find once I do. As for the "Compatibility Mode", I did in fact try that as well, but to no avail, the problem wasn't fixed. I will say though, that when I played the game the first time (a few years ago, that is), it was on a Windows XP computer. Now that it's on Windows 7, I have a feeling that this may be the cause of the problem.

On another note - I mentioned this problem to my brother (who studied Computer Engineering and programmed games for a short while), and he said that the game could just be "crapping out" on me. I say "crapping out", because those were his exact words. Now, has anyone here ever heard of that happening with a game, where it just "gave up" on you? Sounds a bit far-fetched to me, but again, I'm not a computer expert.

Thanks again for all the help, everyone! Having to have this fixed soon!

PS - And no, this isn't the Steam version. It is the original CD game.

lol. Is crapping out the technical term? It is unlikely that the game is just deciding not to work.

My thoughts exactly... As if to say it just "gave up" on me...? Anyways, I digress... At least now I know that this is the least likely of the cases.

Thanks, pretre!
