Flames of War seems like an interesting game that I might play if it proves to be good enough, but I know not where to begin. The main website seemed very vast for somebody looking for a concise but informational description of the game. Where should I start on resources for this?

I would wait a bit. There is a chance that the third edition might come out within the next three months.

3rd edition looks pretty much definite.

The What Would Patton Do Podcast is a nice source for FoW infor (and I don't even play FoW).

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

But which models do you collect, for what forces. etc. You kinda do need the new book.

He'll need the new book to play the game. But remember that FoW uses the Briefing books for it's army lists - he'd have a safe bet if he picked up either a compilation book (Turning Tide/Earth & Steel, Red Bear/Grey Wolf, North Africa, Eastern Front) or anything Blitzkrieg and onwards. The new rules shouldn't invalidate anything in those books.

True, for the new books.

More accurately, they shouldn't invalidate anything in Grey Wolf and Red Bear. The other books will probably receive errata.

Also, the first Bulge release will probably appear shortly after the V3 mini rulebook is made available.
