Well its Christmas, the season for giving and what not, and here I am wondering just what you my fellow Dakkanauts have been doing to help your fellow man. I'm just bashing around wondering what ya'll try to do to make other's lives a little easier at this time of year, be it just doing to dishes for the misses for once or working in your neighbourhood's soup kitchen. So lay it all bear Dakka, and remember, you might just earn a few more points with Mr Claus for sharing. ^^

Today whilst Christmas shopping I saw an old man trying to get down an escalator into the subway. He was using a zimmerframe and was shaking pretty badly. I stood there for a minute trying to work out what he was doing, if he was really going to try and get down that escalator on his own. So I walked over and mentioned that there was a disabled access route just around the corner, but he responded by saying that he knew but he didn't think he had the strength to make it. So I helped out, took his zimmerframe down into the station and waited for him to come down too, but after a while I wondered what was taking him to only find him still at the top of the escalator clinging to the rail and loosing his balance. People were doing their best to ignore him and shoving by, so I just walked back up and helped him down myself, but it was the sheer number of people that didn't help out that was shocking-young people, couples and families. He said that this happens all the time to him and that whenever he's been to the larger cities he's treated even worse. This was outside a shopping centre, he was just an old man that couldn't walk very well and people were just too busy using the shortcut through the train station to even bat an eyelid at him. All it was was a few minutes out of their lives to help someone out, but they chose to go off and scramble after those Christmas deals. Next time that you see a person like that think that it could be you, it might just be age, but you could be in a car accident and wind up in a wheel chair or suffer from some debilitating that you have forseen. Just don't treat them like they don't exist.

*I'm not saying that anyone here is immoral on Dakka or anything, nor am I wanting to make myself seem like some good samaratan. Just trying to generate a discussion about how each of us can put our own priorities aside for a second and give someone else a bit of a hand with theirs. ^^

Its not today but Im counting it anyhow: Neighbors car is broken, drove his daughters to school 4 miles away(I live across the street from one, my wife works half a mile away at another...it must be some fething school) and helped him fix that daihatsu POS which sounds easy except I don't speak Spanish and he doesn't Speak English...and parts for daihatsus are fething impossible to find. I consider this my good deed for the week, his wife brought my wife fruit salad...thank god THEY speak the same language.
