so I had a little tournament on sunday, and I was up against a guy using a scout marine army...anyways I shot at a group of his scouts and killed a couple and when I was about to assault him he says he can use combat tactics to move away from my orks...is that legal to do that on my turn at any time like that?

If you killed 25% then it would have forced a morale check at the end of the shooting phase right before the assault phase. If there was no special character that adds a chapter tactics, the base combat tactics allows marines to choose to fail morale checks instead of take them.

So it comes down to whether there was a special character like Vulkan Hestan and whether you dealt 25% casualties in the shooting phase.

That's actually a very common space marine tactic. Get shot, fall back out of assault range and auto-regroup. Shoot the crap out of whatever shot you..

It's also pretty much the entire point of Combat Tactics.

Anyway, yes - morale tests are made at the end of any phase in which a unit lost 25%+ of its models. Rulebook, p44.

However, that choice would have to be made at the end of the shooting phase when morale rolls are made, not when you declare the assault.

That's kinda dumb that marines can do that! Like, wow. But that's good to know that it can be used that way for sure!

On a small side note......WHY CAN'T WOLVES SCOUTS COMBAT SQUAD! Lol its frustrating! I understand why the rest can't but the scouts are loners!

Anyways good question and clarification

Tyranids will consume the universe!!! There is no chance for survival!!

Because 6 combat squads of melta-guns coming in off the back field would break the game. It's a balance thing.

Plus, you know, Space Wolves in general can't combat squad. It's one of the ways in which their codex is unique and plays differently from other SM.

Not to mention the fact that their background doesn't support it. That's like saying "Why can't Tyranids combat squad?"
