Hi all my local gaming group has decided to start playing WHFB. I've been thinking about for some time but didn't know anyone else that played. So I'm looking for alittle help. I don't have any money now until after christmas, when I'll be getting the rulebook, and I've been playing 40k for a long time. I have a rough idea of the rules, as in distance makes a difference for BS and movement workes differently ect, but I have no idea of how magic or combat works. I think I know what style of army I want to play; I'd like something quite shooting heavy (I run Orks in 40k and fancy a change) and I like the idea of artillery. Also I'm terrible at painting flesh so I would like to avoid this, or eveyone in my army will appear to have exclusive access to the only Tanfastic in the world. If someone could help with those points I'd appreciate it, thanks.

Well, from what I've heard, the best army shooting is Dwarves with their warmachines, although that would force you to paint flesh.
After them I've heard a Nuln-themed Empire army (Nuln is a major city in Fantasy, with the Empires best shooty). Is quite viable. Though that too forces flesh.
Other than that, I'm not really sure.
Dark Elves have access to some pretty good crossbowmen. Tomb Kings sometimes run list compromising large units of bowmen + Khalida (A character giving the bows poisoned attacks, meaning 'to hit' rolls of 6 automatically wound).
Orcs and Goblins, or well, Goblins have really cheap units with bows.
That said, I'm not a very good Fantasy player, and face a rather limited number of foes So most of my advice is just repeating advices from other here.
Also, a little note... In Fantasy, magic and Close Combat reigns supreme. Shooting rarely has the same impact on the game as Magic or CC has.

I'd say get the Island of Blood, as for roughly the price you'd pay for the ruleook, you get the mini rulebook and a lot of figures. If you do this with a friend you can swap the armies and you have a good starting point
Both the Skaven and the High Elves have good shooting so they fulfill your criteria. And neither army has a particularly large ammount of flesh to paint, so that box is ticked.

The boxed st is a good buy to get the rules; you can be playing in a weekend. Once you'ce got the hang of it I would suggest Dwarfs. They have the best warmachines and arguably the best shooting. Empire can also spam cheap shoting, and they have the Steam Tank to boot.

While the IoB is the best bet for starting an army and getting into the game. The problem might be that it "may" not be the type of army you are looking for.
High Elves are NOT IMHO the best at shooting. Their only warmachine is a bolt thrower that is over priced, their only ranged unit are S3 Elf bows that are laghed at by most regular core. If you want a shooty army I do not recommend them. HE shooting can be accomplished with a MSU evasion type list, however I do not think it is the strongest build in that book.
Skaven are a bit different. Where HE are elite Skaven are not, where HE are few Skaven are plentiful. They do have quite a bit more shooting variety than HE and are a bit stronger at it. They also have more varied builds that HE which is also a plus.
WIth regards to the rest of shooty armies, I believe the current kings of it are indeed the Dwarves. If I were to rank shooty armies they would probably be in this order:
Dwarves
The Empire
Ogres
Skaven
Dark Elves
Most armies have a shooty element to them, but at the end of the day they all rely on some sort of infantry block and CC. Other than the first 3 in that list, I do not believe any army can just sit there and take pop shots from long range much like IG or Tau can from 40k.
With the regard to painting flesh, most armies will require some mainly in the face area. You can pretty much skip this with some armies like Skaven, Lizardmen or Beastmen.

Thanks a lot for your help peoples. I've heard Dwarves were good at shooting but I was hoping there was an alternative 'cos of my flesh-painting-phobia. I guess I'll just have to practise. Looking at what's been said I'll probablly end up with Dwarves or Ratmen. Thanks again

TBH unless you take Slayers there isn't a lot of flesh on Dwarfs really...

Flesh is pretty easy, paint 2 coats of dwarf flesh. Use devlan mud. Not gonna win a golden deamon but you should be happy with it

I would suggest Empire but you don't like to paint flesh. just pick an old Empire WD of Ebay or something.
