Subject: Necrons: Triarch Stalkers?

So my question is: Is the Triarch Stalker a competitive choice for a 'Cron army?
To me, it seems like a lot of points for something that isn't particularly hard for an enemy to kill. Having said that, its ability to make any shot at a unit that the stalker has hit in that phase twin linked makes it sound like a decent support unit. The size of the model (when they release it) could make a pretty big difference, because if it's a small model it'll be easier to find cover for, whereas if it's big it'll get shot to bits pretty quick.
Any thoughts?

Yes. Necrons are not space marines. They are not meant to be a one man army.
You have to support their guys, who in turn will support other guys.
The triarch stalker represents this perfectly.
Another thing about crons is that it is wise not to underestimate AV13. AV13 opentopped is surprisingly resilient, and I have yet to lose a Ghost or doomsday ark (though the doom ark was crippled once...)

The issue I have is it has the only melta gun in the book, so it's going to hit armor and ideally (being melta) it will wreck it. After that it's twin linking ability is for not.

it also have the heavy flamer thingy. It isn't exactly one dimensional.
heck, just shooting at a sub par target to get the twin-linking is a pretty good ability, especially if there is nothing better to shoot at.
I have faced these guys a few times and they are really annoying. Of course without any type of CCW they are fairly easy to tie up in combat. I had crowe go and troll one once. It was funny

They can be strong, but the army has to be built to use them. If you're going to use them you should probably have two, just to make sure. Since they don't have any real close combat strengths like grey templar said, I've been taking them with the twin-linked H. Gauss gun. It helps stay out of combat since by giving them a 36" shooting range, I'll just stay in the back field with them instead of the mid-field.
That said though you probably wouldn't even want to fit one in until around 1750 at least. mass AV 13 lists are really good for them since it also hurts their target priority a lot when they have to choose to either shoot the command barge, annihilation barge, trairch stalkers. It doesn't become an easy choice when you make it difficult to prioritize for them.

Use them to mark any squad you want dead that turn, then light that unit up with tesla immortals, guarantee anything short of a super-pally squad will die

yeah, tesla is nasty with them working together. Heck, anything in the Necron codex is going to really benifit from the twin-linking.
And let me tell you, that AV13 is a PITA to get past. mostly because if you do get a penetrating hit you are probably going to kill it because its open topped so it is practically AV13 the entire time.

The stalkers are kind of an odd unit, with the ability to do a lot of different tasks when properly equipped. The Heat ray, essentially a double shot MM will tear apart any Armour. The hvy guass is another great AT weapon, also strong vs MC. The Particle shredder is a very strong anti-horde weapon, and when combined with a squad of gauss immortals will wipe hordes from the field.
They are great units, but only if you know what you are using it for. They are still AP 13 walkers with 3 CC attacks ( 4 if you charge it ) which is nothing to laugh about.

Running them In Pairs, with an AV 13 heavy list is probably the best way to go. Only one, sticks out for Target priority. 2 muddles that a bit more.
I Prefer the Heatray. Even if you're not in melta range, if you get a pen that's still a 50% to blow up a vehicle. Not bad at all.
Their biggest glaring issue, is once they lose their weapon, they become completely useless. If they had a DCCW, it wouldn't be so bad, but as it is, it's powerfist bait in CC.

I've ran 2 stalkers in almost everylist I've written and played with since the book came out and I swear by them! Twin-linked gauss cannons gives my list much needed long range support and I run alot of telsa (3 squads of immortals and 3 annilation barges) and the twin-linking is absolutely gold for that. Not only am I recouping lost hits, but getting another chance to roll that golden .
The first few turns I'll attempt to get a few pop shots off at distance armor and see what I can do as the immortals and barges take a turn to get into 24 inch range, but after that they light up targets and I spam the hell out of a unit with electric shooting forcing a ton of saves to be rolled.
As for their resiliancy, oddly enough the only time I've ever lost one was in the assualt phase as terrible things like monsterous creatures just rock his world. Most of the time though in the desperate turns of 5-7 I actually will assualt a troop choice or some squashy low strength unit to tie them down knowing that they have no hope of penetrating AV13.
As it was mentioned these guys are just fantasic support units forcing your opponent to choose between shooting it down and potentially not pening AV13 or focusing your firepower which only gets stronger beacuse of stalker. I really think once these guys get an offical model you will see them all over the place in non-wrathwing/scarab farm lists. I know my killa kan proxys are begging to be replaced!
