Relatively new to tyranids but have played other armies regularly. I am playing a relatively friendly game and this list is by no means super competitive and i play vs Chaos SM. I'd like to use a good portion of genestealers. I have used models that I actually own so far but am willing to try new things if they are better suited. Here is the list followed by a basic strategy: HQ Hive Tyrant - 210pts Lash/bone TL devourers w worms, hive commander Leech Essence, Paroxysm Tyrant Guard - 60 pts Elite 2 Hive Guard - 100 pts 2 Hive Guard - 100 pts Troops 10 Genestealers - 140 pts 10 Genestealers - 140 pts 10 Termagaunts - 50 pts Tervigon - 200pts Scything talon, AG, TS, Catalyst Heavy Trygon - 250 pts AG, prime Outflank the genesteals and the termagaunts (hive commander). Trygon deep strikes and basically only put the tervigon, guard, and tyrant on the table in cover. Spawn gaunts for a bit and fly up with the Tyrant to cause damage. Or would it make more sense to use hive commander for the tervigon? Thoughts?

Doesn't seem too bad, but my first reaction would be to drop the trygon prime, he just doesn't seem to fill any gap besides having a big beasty MC
What I would run in that sort of list is something to endanger the enemy if the castle up in the middle, specifically, my favorite model in the codex, gargoyles.
you could save an additional 50 pts by ditching the termigaunts, I know it makes your tervigon a non troop choice, but hear me out.
with the additional points, you can give your stealers toxin sacs, this makes them significantly more dangerous on the charge. and you can pick up a big brood of gargoyles, give then FNP and your whole advancing swarm has a cover save, and the enemy has one shooting phase to gun them all down before he's held down until the stealers arrive.
Another way to go would be to drop the trygon and hive tyrant and termigaunts completely, taking many more, infiltrating genestealers, this lets you deploy "last" at 18" or 12" if they can't draw sight lines to the bugs, and be immediately in his lines, the trick to this would be to have enough stealers that he can't kil them all before his whole army is assaulted on possibly the first turn. If you go this route the idea is to have as many stealer bodies as possible in smaller, harder to exterminate units

All good points and I do love genestealers (I own 28 so can use up to that many). The reason I can't drop the trygon is simply because I love this model and my army is based around it so dropping it seems tough. I do like gargoyles actually so I may try them out as well. Do you think outflanking the tervigon is a good idea or is this unit best left in the back pumping out little gaunts. My plan was to outflank it with genestealers hoping to give them all FNP.

That is a good plan, although wings are awesome the 60 pts seems better spent on another model who can do something.

Drop the scything talons on the Tervigon unless you really can't spend it somewhere else. While he's pretty good, using his abilities to support surrounding troops (especially termagaunts). I think Using hive commander on the Tervigon is a great idea. Who wouldn't worry about a MC that spawns gaunts flanking? If you do so, remember that it is possible to bring the termagaunts in from reserve using the trygon once he deep strikes, allowing all units to spawn very close to the enemy. With most of your units infiltrating/flanking, this will allow your Hive Tyrant to walk up with the guard if you drop the wings so he can use his synapse to counteract the hive guards lurk. I think it's a pretty good list, very up front in your face which is what the nids are all about!

Had a game with this list and it worked out pretty well. The trygon was a stud! We are bumping it up to 1500 pts. Any help or thoughts is appreciated in the upgrade of points.
