For the necron codex, Mindshackle Scarabs, Bloodswarm Nanoscarabs and Exile Rays all have to randomly choose an enemy when determining its rules. I am asking you guys whether you simply choose the enemy unit yourselves, or is there some special rule i am missing? In all fairness i think that it is a poorly explained rule for each of these, i havent found them in any other codexes, and it just goes to overly confuse people attempting to use the rule. What do you guys think I should do? Do i have to go to extreme lengths to pull off the rule?

Number the models in the target unit. Roll a die. Apply the result. Most LGS will have die sizes up to a d20 - they'll work fine.

Just choosing one isn't random.

You don't have to go to 'extreme lengths'... just number them and roll a die.

Rolling a dice is the best option just choosing one wouldn't be "random".

If you lack a die with a sufficiently high number of sides, and the number you're selecting from is an even number, just divide them by two, and use a coinflip or a D6 as a high/low to split them. For example, if rolling out of a group of 10, roll high/low to determine which group of five you'll roll among. Then roll a d6 for that group, re-rolling 6s.

Alternately, you can just write numbers on little scraps of paper and draw them out of a hat or something.

All that matters is that it's a random selection, and that you set it up so that the chance of selecting any given model among the group is equal.

Hmmm, this thread on Warseer is quite interesting.

I had a bunch of kids placing all models in question in a circle and tossing a scatter dice in the middle. While absolutely not useful, pretty hilarious.

One would think that the rise of the Gk and their OSR would have reminded everyone of those little arrows

For Bloodswarm Nanoscarabs, and Trazyn's Surrogate hosts, if you can't determine the randomness on a simple roll or two, then just choose/let your opponent choose. That's what I've let my opponents do, and done myself. There does reach a point where it really impedes the game, and induces unneeded complications depending on how many units/models are in question for the above special rules.

For Mind Shackle Scarabs, There is no reason why you can't random a D6, since there can only be so many Models in Base Contact, at the point where it should easily be divided by a d6 or two.
