I'll Be Back
|
Hello dakkanauts, this is my first forum thread here on Dakka. I recently became interested in 40K thanks to my friends Frawg and Unholy Martyr. I decided to play Necrons roughly 6 months before the army was revised, and now that I have read the codex, I am even more in love than I was before. I've been working with Frawg to build, and I think my 1000 point list is pretty damn solid. Posting it for now until I get my 1850 list fully revised. I would appreciate feedback as to how you think they would do. Here we go.
HQ:
Necron Overlord with Resurrection Orb: 120
Royal Court
Cryptek Harbringer of Destruction with Solar Pulse: 55
Cryptek Harbringer of Despair with Veil of Darkness: 60
Troops:
9 Necron Warriors in Ghost Ark: 232
10 Necron Warriors: 130
10 Immortals: 170
Fast Attack
3 Canoptek Wraiths with Whip Coils: 135
Heavy Support
Annihilation Barge: 90
Here is the basic thought behind the small force. I mostly built it to learn how to build an army list as well as playing small games to learn to play. The Necron Overlord is in with the 10 man warrior unit on foot, really there for moral support and to keep them safe "incaseshit". The Cryptec of Destruction is in the Ghost Ark with the 9 man squad. They are mobile harassment as well as being capable of using the Solar Pulse to make it night fight if needed, when needed. The second Cryptek is tucked neatly inside the 10 man unit of immortals. His Veil of Darkness allows himself and his unit of Immortals to disappear off the table, and deepstrike back somewhere else on the table, instantly. They appear where I need them to shoot the crap out of something. The 3 Wraiths are really nothing more than a deep striking unit that never has to worry about dying on the jump in, and can either tie up a unit for a round, or wipe out a unit of weaklings and move back into dangerous terrain. I think this is a solid list so far, and the 1850 list is really just building on this same philosophy. Please feel free to tell me what you think. I will probably start a P&M blog once Frawg starts teaching me how to paint, and take photos of my models.
I expect to have the army up and running by the end of January. Cheers!

Me personally, I love the army. The idea and everything behind it. But then again I am a bit partial.

I like it, you seem to have the bases covered in some way or another, its also a good basis for starting a larger list and coming to terms with the codex.
Are you running the immortals gauss or tesla?
Without having seen a report I couldnt say exactly how it'll go but you seem quite solid with few/no units that are a gamble.

Honestly, it's a solid start...one thing to note: With the Overlord easily singled out in Close Combat, you may want to toss a Phase Shifter on him to save him from Power Weapons and the like.
Otherwise its a solid start!

Res Orb on a foot lord is a bit situational. If you've got him in the warrior squad, it's overkill because of the Ghost Ark. If you've got him in the Immortal squad, you'll need to roll 3 "4's" for it to pay for itself (which it might well do, depending on the situation you stick the immortals in).
Being that you probably don't want to lose your lord to a deep-strike mishap, I'm betting the Lord stands with the Warriors and the Immortals get VoD'd around.
I'd drop the Orb and go with mindshackle scarabs and save 15 points.
What to do with those 15 points? My suggestion would be to drop the Wraiths and take a unit of 10 scarabs.
Scarabs provide
1) A massive distraction
2) Super killy against vehicles, likely a multi-assault on turn 2 against mech heavy MEQ armies
3) A great tar-pit for anything annoying on the board.
They have 4 attacks base and entropic strike. Ah-maze-ing.
I like Wraiths too, but I think Scarabs would have better synergy with your list.
You could take 7 Scarabs and give your lord a Phase Shifter, as a previous poster mentioned, or drop down to 6 and give your lord a 2+ save as well. (Then you can always take the first wound on him for whatever unit he's with, and usually save it, and *rolleyes* when you don't! *laughs*)

Scarabs won't do him much good in this area, especially without Spiders pooping out more. The players around here tend to more hybrid lists that are more than prepared to mulch a SCARAB unit.

Cool, I can appreciate that.
A unit of 10 scarabs has always performed for me, even in death, but I can understand how circumstances might be different with a different group of gamers.
For 150 pts you could take 4 wraiths, one with a whip coil (I know the magic number is 2 coils, but 2 more wounds is cool too, right?)

Let's answer some questions.
The Immortals will be running gauss to start, just to see what they can do with VoD. Will more than likely test both weapon choices to see what works for me.
I like Phase Shifter over Mindshackle Scarabs due to the fact that I don't want stuff getting that close. I enjoy watching bodies fall from afar
After taking things into consideration, here's the new list
HQ:
Necron Overlord with Phase Shifter 135
Royal Court:
Cryptek Harbringer of Destruction with Solar Pulse: 55
Cryptek Harbringer of Despair with Veil of Darkness: 60
Troops:
9 Necron Warriors in Ghost Ark: 232
10 Necron Warriors: 130
10 Immortals: 170
Fast Attack:
3 Canoptek Wraiths with 2 Whip Coils: 125
Heavy Support:
Annihilation Barge: 90
Total Cost----997
Same idea as before. VoD Cryptek with the 10 Immortals. Overlord with 10 Warriors on foot. Ghost Arc close by for coverage. Wraiths deepstrike in. Barge to blow up stuff that looks at me funny.
Thanks for the input all. I will for sure be doing some battle reports when I get up and running. Any more ideas, throw them my way.
