I was tossing around ideas with the missile abuse you can do with Space Wolves and I was wondering if the following list would be at all competitive or just plain fun to play in a casual game. C&C welcome!

HQ – 130pts
Rune Priest – 130pts
+Chooser of the Slain, Wolftooth Necklace, Living Lightning & JotWW, Saga of the Beastslayer

ELITES – 620pts
Wolf Guard (10) – 425pts
+Combi-Melta & Power Weapon (8)
+Rhino
+TDA w/ CML x2 (LF)

Wolf Guard (5) – 195pts
+ Combi-Melta & Power Weapon (4)
+TDA w/ CML (LF)

TROOPS – 680pts
Grey Hunters (8) – 170pts
+Rhino, Meltagun, Standard

Grey Hunters (8) – 170pts
+Rhino, Meltagun, Standard

Grey Hunters (8) – 170pts
+Rhino, Meltagun, Standard

Grey Hunters (8) – 170pts
+Rhino, Meltagun, Standard

HEAVY SUPPORT – 420pts
Long Fangs Pack (6) – 140pts
+5 Missile Launchers

Long Fangs Pack (6) – 140pts
+5 Missile Launchers

Long Fangs Pack (6) – 140pts
+5 Missile Launchers

Basically, RP goes with the 8 WG, the 4 WG split off to the GH squads and the LF's just rain death with their WG CML brothers adding their rockets of glory. The Saga was taken only because I have 10pts left over and couldn't think of anywhere else to put it.

Anywho, let me know what you think.

Cheers~

To be honest, I think that you would be better off if you put Njal in Terminator armor and ran the Wolf Guard unit on foot. This would give him a large footprint and a tough unit to break along with various other sundry options.

Otherwise, looks pretty legit.

Yeah, I would like to do that, but he's almost 2 times the point cost. What would you recommend dropping to fit him into the list to work. Also, he'd be the only TDA guy in the WG unit. I know the Rhino would drop but where else would you suggest shaving points to fit in Njal?

I don't know if it's 'cheesy' per-say. It's a lot of missiles, but a unit out flanking or DP'ing into my LF would tar pit them if I can't kill them before they charge. The GH's are good but they're still MEQ and still die to the same things that kill normal marines, even though they do get a Power Weapon and 1 added Melta shot from the WG joining them. It is 21 missiles that have the 'potential' to be fired but I don't think it's unbeatable or completely dominating. (emphasis is my own)

Don't use Njal, I played around with him in a fun list and he never covered the cost unless he was with a terminator squad, if you want to have about 500 points tied up with 6 terminators then have fun.

Looks like a solid list. I like the numbers but worry it may have problems with terminator lists due to limited ap2 and 1 weaponry but weight of numbers should balance that out.

Well when I was considering Njal in a unit, I was looking at the unit that has the 2x CML Wolf Guard as I assumed you were going to keep the CML in the same unit. I don't really see any advantage with putting them in the Long Fangs. Their better off as a separate unit so you can fire at more targets.

I've had Njal crack open a handful of Chimeras and in the next turn cause the leftovers to fall back off of the table. Njal works if you play smart...

Well while I appriciate your subtle dig, I disagree with you.

Firstly, if you want to use the CML as part of the wolf guard you loose the ability to move the wolf guard around quickly unless you mount them in a LR. I find the need for flexible units that can take 12" in the last turn is very important in the current metagame. Plus 18" death radius with melta fire on that unit is better then anything njal can do but you have turned a decent combat unit cabable of taking out lots of heavy hitters into a sheild rathen then the spear tip it should be.

My problem with Njal is that he rarely pays off, he survives well enough and can drop a decent amount of psyker shots on a squad but he is not as good as the landraider you could use instead.

Putting the CML on the Longfangs makes splitting fire to snipe transports or ICs much better, weight of numbers is god.
The 21 missiles coming at you each turn from the back line means you have to split focus a lot more then if you have a 500pt+ deathstar in the middle of the board. My worry is that with a lot of orks out there you'll end up with the deathstar stuck in combat and go under while you loose out on those 126 points of firepower which would take out a statistical 4 boys a turn from shooting.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.
