The GW brand works great but for feth sake it's $15. I was wondering if there was anything cheaper that was just as good.

I use krylon. It can make things look glossy but it's cheap, about 1/2 of GW price per can.

I've used the P3 stuff and it was pretty much the same thing. I think it saved me $2.00.

I've heard some good things about the army painter and flames of war primers. The nice thing with them is that they come in a range of colour that can certainly help reduce painting time.

Yes, Any.

I use Rustoleum auto primer, $2 a can at Walmart.

+1 to Krylon. I prime all my models in white and have never had any issues with gloss, etc.

Same thing as P3 primer-usually cheaper than P3 primer and found at auto stores. P3 primer (and by extension, Duplicolor) is the best primer I've ever used.

I have used either Testors flat black or grey primer. Works great. I have also used army painter red primer for my blood angels. All that stuff works as well as or better than the GW primer.

I use .99 flat black from an DIY store and it works perfetly fine. In fact I would wager that the average gamer could tell no difference between it and GW spray primer if asked to pick models using it out of lineup...

Sandable auto primer from the local autoparts place.

Added advantage of the very local autoparts store (two block walk).
GW is four suburbs away. Local AP dealer is 2 suburbs away.

GW spray paints are also NOT primers, by any stretch of the definition.

+5 Krylon!

Never an issue with gloss, ever. And mine get a good coating of matte finish after it's all painted up anyways, so whatever. And that 360 degree head is nice for spraying up into those armpits and such...

+1 Rustoleum. Bit pricier than Kylon, still less than GW, and you can guarentee you know your mini will never rust....lol....

GW spray paint is NOT a primer. That being said, I airbrush my primer with Vallejo Model Air Gray Primer, which can be hand brushed on as well.

If you insist on a spray primer, Floquil Gray Primer is where it's at, made to keep fine detail intact as it's a model train primer.

Krylon White Primer and Krylon Ultraflat Camouflage black are my current favs.

Great price ($5.00 a can), nice thin coats and the spray angle is nice and vertical.

Nope.

imho I would prime grey, but that's just me, I prefer the neutral colors to dark.

Just pay attention to the can. They have several different types of paint in the Krylon cans, then just primer.

If you see "Gloss".... stay away from it. bad mojo.

I use armory primers. Comes in black, white, grey. It is made for what we do. However it is about $7 a can but worth it to me not cause problems especially on plastic, hard to strip.

Hey man, i'd way rather pay $7 then $15 anyday. I'm starting to wonder if anyone uses GW spray paint.

Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Primer in White. $5 at Walmart and I get my employee discount. I originally went with Grey for my Space Wolves but I wanted them to look really bright so I switched to White and am quite happy.

I've never used the GW primer and probably never will.

I love Testors flat black. It's just about idiot proof and dead flat. The flat white is less idiot proof, but used judiciously also fantastic.

But a $2 can of krylon works well if you're skilled with a can. Less flat though.

It's spelled "cavalry." NOT "calvary."

I suggest Armory gray primer. It covers well and, used in nice dry air on clean models, takes very well. The only issue I have with it is the smell; it's not too bad (kinda like banana muffins and paint thinner), but it follows you indoors and lingers for hours.

I dunno... I imagined the sept guarding the Perdus rift would wear the same black armour as Ulthwe eldar. Maybe being in close proximity to the warp makes you emo.

Yeah, I was always under the impression that the GW brand was the beat and that's why it costs so much. I see i was dead wrong thank god.

Testors for me! Always used it for just about any modelling project, and they work just fine.

ColorPlace. $0.99 for a full-size can at Walmart can't be beat, price-wise, and both the flat black and white work just fine - they go on smooth with good adhesion and have enough tooth to paint on comfortably (everything the GW sprays are supposed to do, but more consistent, from what I've heard of them). Personally, I think the need for actual primers is grossly exaggerated for what most of us do.

I was actually starting to think the same thing. I mean, for some colors it's a must, but they are some paints that are thick enough on their own to maybe not need primer. Sounds like a good experiment to me.

I've used Duplicolor many times. The black is not as dark as Chaos Black, so I don't use it for vehicles that are meant to stay black, but otherwise I use it exclusively.

I was absolutely in love with Army Painter Desert Yellow, until they changed it. Yup, changed it. It's not the color it used to be. They did refund my money, so no hard feelings. Well, not much. . .

Anyway, the point is, don't buy three cans from Army Painter thinking you know what color it is.

The main difference I've seen is endurance. The dollar can of spray paint tends to get dinged up pretty easy. It's not as noticeable on plastic models, but for metal minis you can tell a big difference after a while. My 90's terminators all got cheap spray paint and it's flaking off now where as my special weapons teams from the same time frame that got the actual primer are still looking good.

I love my Krylon gray primer. It's still pretty cheap and I KNOW it lasts.

I use Army Painter black spray in Summer and paint on Vallejo Polyurethane black primer in the winter when its wet and cold outside. It can be sprayed on with an airbrush as well.
